Unsubscribe from the single list subscription

We just started noticed that unsubscibe links generated at the bottom of each marketing email do not allow people to unsubscribe from that one mailing subscription, but it unsubscibes them from all mailing lists instead. We have customers subscribing for multiple mailing lists (e.g there is a separate mailing list for each product group). So lest say customer is not interested in animation software anymore, but wants to stay subscibed to photoediting software mailings. I know you can include mailing preferences link, but this shows you list of all email subscriptions including those customer never signed in for (and could be completely unrelated to his/her activities) - which is super confusing.

Is it really imposiible or am I just overlooking something there?

Hi there!

I believe CAN SPAM laws require email footers to include an unsubscribe link in your email footer, so I don’t think you can remove this piece in HubSpot. As you mentioned, the subscription preferences page is the way to go to ensure they’re opted into their preferred communications from you.

I wish HubSpot offered more customization to the preferences page, but I don’t think it is confusing, if anything it might entice more subscriptions they didn’t know were available.

Hey Stan,

Using the HubSpot Design Manager, you have the ability to create custom footers that give you options to customize your “unsubscribe” buttons. I believe Hubspot won’t allow you to send an email without their {{unsubscribe}} token (per CAN SPAM laws), but you can easily add a second, more prominent, option like “unsubscribe from emails like this” and essentially have that link remove contacts from specific mailing lists or change their subscription types. You could also create a simple landing page that will host a confirmation message that they have been removed from the list.

This solution would need to be replicated for each subscription type that you have and those emails would need their own templates with their appropriate footer. But once set up, a single workflow could handle the automation of unsubscribing contacts for you without them being removed from every subscription type.

Hi @Joe-Kelp , I came across this post as I was searching for the same solution. Can you please specify how to add such a second option like “unsubscribe from emails like this”. Cannot find a token to use for this case.

Thanks, Alex

Hi Joe,

I’m looking for teh same solution - can you advise on how we can find the right token for the email groups. if possible please do a shot documentation as it will help many

Many thanks

@stanDM any luck with this?

We’re running into a very similar problem. In theory, when somebody clicks on “Unsubscribe” in our emails, they SHOULD be taken to a “Subscription Preferences” page that shows them all the potential newsletters they can opt in or out of. That’s what we see when we preview the page in our Settings > Marketing > Emails > Subscriptions menu.

HOWEVER, in our testing, whenever we click on the “Unsubscribe,” button in our emails, we’re taken to a page that only offers an “Unsubscribe from All,” option. Much like @stanDM, we have a lot of different newsletter types and sometimes our recipients only want to unsubscribe from one list, while staying on another. Why are they being taken to an “unsubscribe from all” page?

Question to this if anyone can help me.
Our current emails have in the footer ‘unsubscribe’ and ‘manage subscriptions’. HubSpots default settings.
So people don’t unsubscribe for all marketing. can I re-word ‘manage subscriptions’ to unsubscribe and it takes them to all the emails they can?

What is everyone’s thoughts?

Hello @stanDM and everyone,

Configure unsubscribe links in email

What is it?

Configurable unsubscribe links let marketers control how an unsubscribe action is applied in emails. Instead of always removing a contact from all email communications, you can configure the link so that it only unsubscribes them from the specific subscription type tied to that email.

Why does it matter?

Marketers can control the unsubscribe experience choosing for contacts to either opt out of just one category of communication while staying subscribed to others; it can minimize users unsubscribing from all communications unintentionally.

How does it work?

In the email editor, you’ll find new unsubscribe link options in the Email Content > Footer panel. Instead of only having “Unsubscribe from all” or “Manage preferences,” you can now select “Unsubscribe from this subscription type” as an option.

This can be configured per email campaign: you can choose to show subscription-specific unsubscribe links, general unsubscribe links, manage preferences links, or a combination of these options. The feature is available in default email footers and custom email footers.

When contacts click the subscription-specific unsubscribe link, they’ll be taken to a page that clearly shows which subscription type they’re unsubscribing from, with an option to access their full preference management page if they want to make additional changes.

Callouts:

  • This feature still ensures compliance by offering a clear opt-out path on the confirmation page (a link to navigate to manage email preferences is still visible).
  • Marketers can continue to decide on a per-campaign basis which unsubscribe experience makes the most sense for their campaign whether that’s all communications, subscription-specific, or using the Preferences link.
  • If using custom templates in Design Manager for your emails, you can use HubL variable unsubscribe_single.
  • This marketing email feature is available to Marketing Hub Pro+ customers.
