Custom Ticket Property - Setting a default value

I have created a customer property for our support tickets called ‘Severity’. It is a dropdown select list with 3 values.

I would like it have a default value, unfortunately I cannot seem to find an option to define a default value.

Any suggestions?

Hi @James-Preseem,

As far as I know, this is currently not possible. It has been requested in the HubSpot Ideas section of the community here. I recommend you upvote and leave a comment with your use case.

One workaround would be a ticket-based workflow, enrolling tickets based on the criterion that the value for the property ‘Severity’ is unknown. For all tickets in the workflow, you can then set the property value. (‘Set property’ in the ‘Choose an action’ sidebar on the right.)

If you’re using a form to create tickets, you can set a default value for a form field.

Hope this helps!

Is this still not possible as of 8/16/2023? Thanks

Hi @JHernandez65,
Thank you for reaching out to the Community!
You can set a default value of a native property added into a form by editing the property within the form and then, on the left panel, you can add a “default value” (please see below).

However, you won’t have this option yet for custom properties.

I also wanted to invite a couple of subject matter experts to this conversation @himanshurauthan, @Josh and @Dan1 do you have any suggestions on how @JHernandez65 could set a value on the property, please?
If anybody else has anything to add and/or share, please feel free to join in the conversation :slightly_smiling_face:
Thanks and have a great day!
Best,
Bérangère

Set default property values

What is it?

You can now set default values for properties in HubSpot. When creating or editing a property, admins can define a value that will automatically be applied whenever a new record is created.

Default property values are applied consistently across HubSpot—whether records are created manually, through workflows, or via APIs—so commonly used values are automatically set, saving users a step and keeping data consistent.

Why does it matter?

Many teams rely on the same values being set repeatedly when creating records. Without default values, this often leads to repetitive manual entry, inconsistent data, or complex workflows built just to fill in the blanks.

With default property values, you can:

  • Save time by pre-filling commonly used values
  • Reduce data gaps and “unknown” states
  • Eliminate workflow workarounds used solely to initialize data
  • Improve overall data quality and consistency from the moment a record is created

This makes record creation faster for end users and data management simpler for admins.

How does it work?

  1. In your HubSpot account, click the settings icon in the top navigation bar
  2. In the left sidebar menu, navigate to Properties
  3. Select an existing property (or create a new property)
  4. Click the Field type tab
  5. Set a default value for the property
  6. Once you’re ready, click Save (or click Create if creating a new property)

Once set:

  • The default value is automatically applied to all newly created records
  • Users can still change the value during record creation if needed
  • The default applies everywhere records are created, including via manual entry, workflows, and APIs

What’s not included

Default values are not currently supported for the following property field types:

  • Calculations
  • Rollups
  • Syncs
  • Files
