Unable to import contacts correctly

Hi Folks,

I’ve been on the phone, the computer and the chat line non stop for the last 5 hours trying to set up a Hubspot CRM with no luck. One of the most disapopinting things about this process is how difficult it is to get help. Not an encouraging sign when I’m considering a new product.

I am trying out Hubspot as a CRM for a musician (supposedly something this should be good for) trying to import contacts from an Excel spread sheet, creating the correct properties, then uploading. None of the new properties that I created as I import the files show up in the final contacts list. Categories I did not choose show up with incorrect info in them. What little support the chat team has had to offer seems to be off a script and doesn’t usually make sense for this situation. I sent a copy of the excel file to the chat person and she sent me a screen shot that indicated that on her end, it looked mixed and garbled. I have even considered paying for a subscription just to get support to do the set up, but if support is this weak, I don’t know if it’s worth the money! I would appreciate any help someone out there can give me.

Hi @CVallillo,

HubSpot does not offer support to users of the free tools. That’s why you likely had a bad experience: The people you talked to have other priorities.

Can you check under Settings > Properties whether you created your custom fields on the correct object? It can be easy to accidentally create them for the company object, not the contact object. They wouldn’t show up during the import process then.

The fact that the file seemed corrupted when you sent it to your previous contact person is not very reassuring. Have you tried to copy the information and save it in a fresh file?

Can you share a screenshot of the mapping step of the import process?

Best regards!

Hi, Yes, I understand that I’m dealing sales folks, not support folks, but I am concerned that the process of helping getting set up is so limited. I was prepared to buy a subscription should the product have worked well.

RE the file issue, I downloaded multile version (Excel, Numbers, CSV) all came through fine on my end every time. I only sent the Excel file as requested. The phone person kept referring to it as a “document” and I suspect she didn’t use the correct software to open it up. As soon as I asked what she used to open the file, the conversation went dark and she stated I needed to “go to the community” for answers.

“Can you check under Settings > Properties whether you created your custom fields on the correct object? It can be easy to accidentally create them for the company object, not the contact object. They wouldn’t show up during the import process then.”

I’ll see if I can make sense of that later this afternoon. I will say that I began that process with an earlier phone sales person and did it exactly as I was told to. Irepeated thye process three times, eacgh time making asure I followed the steps as best I could learn.

Hi @CVallillo,

If you could outline what exactly you did, ideally sharing screenshots of your process and the error messages / outcomes, that would help with troubleshooting.

Best regards
