Unable to edit web page content

Hi,

We’ve got a client that just started using the free CMS Hub, we’re hoping they will proceed to a full paid package after a positive experience with the free version.

They’ve just reported problems editing pages. The site is using FreeFlex theme, and the modules that’s prevented from editing are plain two-column content section from the theme, containing image and text. When clicking to edit the section, all that’s available is “Edit in expanded view”, and the resulting expanded view only contains the text “Edit rich text content”…

I’ve been working on the site myself, without any hickups, but now I’m not able to do anything, from either my own and the client’s account.

Any suggestions on how to fix this?

All the best,

Tom

Hello @tbenjaminsen, thank you for posting in our Community!

I want to add our top experts to this conversation @miljkovicmisa @himanshurauthan @Ben_M any recommendations for @tbenjaminsen matter?

Thank you,

Pam

Thanks for your reachout!

Still no solution, so any help will do :slightly_smiling_face:

To be honest, I would show them a full CMS hub if you use it or talk to sales and see if they can unlock things to help make a sale for you. Alternatively you could reach out to the developer of the theme to inquire with them about the issues you are experiencing ( https://www.mojomedialabs.com/ ). I’ve come across a lot of posts recently that has me questioning the quality of the free themes and with the new marketplace it looks like hubspot is trying to address, but it’s not quite there yet.

Hi,

Thanks for your suggestions.

The idea of showing the client a full CMS Hub has of course been considered. Things are more complex than the client jumping on the solution right away, it also incorporates a possible upsell for several hubs, so we don’t want to push it. What was our intention was to slowly convince them that HS was the way to go, considering the tight integration between hubs - multiple solutions that they’ve go spread out on a number of suppliers today.

Oh well, things didn’t work out as planned, since the client almost immidiately ended up having problems editing their content.

I now believe we should just connect with the theme developer to see if they can suggest something.

@tbenjaminsen Could it be that the split module is just two rich text editors where you add the image on one side and text on the other? It sounds like a very basic solution and doesn’t seem like the developer would do that. Was the editing experience differently before or has it always been like this?

It can be a bit of a pain for customers to change from CMS Free to Starter or Pro because most of the time it requires a complete rebuild and with the limitations of free it causes a lot of unnecessary frustration.

I’d be happy to do a demo for you of POWER, which is a paid theme that works with CMS Pro and Enterprise, but we also have a version that is compatible with Free and Starter - if that would be helpful for you to see what capabilities are possible with a theme beyond what is offered for free. No pressure :slightly_smiling_face:

I also wrote a blog in the community about choosing a free theme that might be helpful.

Happy to help if you have questions about CMS Hub or themes in general.

Hi again,

Just wanted to update on the situation described in the original post;

I’ve now reached out to the theme developer (mojomedialabs.com), and they’re poiting towards HS in this case. This is the reply I got from their representative:

Hi, Tom!

This isn’t happening because of the FreeFlex theme but is on HubSpot’s side since it’s the default editor that we are using.

That being said, we have opened a ticket with HubSpot regarding a few other issues that have been reported with our main theme, MojoFlex, which could be happening because of a change on HubSpot’s end.

Hopefully, when they figure out the issues it might resolve what you are seeing, but I would recommend contacting HubSpot support about the editor change.

I hope this helps but let me know if you have any questions or need anything from us.

I’ve also talked to HS on chat, without any solution, so my next step will be calling HS tech support.

Any helpful insight is still really appreciated :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi @tbenjaminsen it sounds like they are doing their best to look into it.

I’m not sure what the default editor has to do with it since every theme uses the default editor, I have one other idea based on something that happened recently with a few of our customers.

When you open the theme, in the left sidebar, you usually see the content for the module you are working on after you click the content on the page and start editing it - but, if you click on the “Add” tab, are you seeing a section at the top called “Theme Modules” or do you see “Common Modules” at the top?

Hi Jennifer!

Thanks for engaging in this peculiar problem :slightly_smiling_face:

When I click on the Add tab, I see “Theme Modules” at the top, “Common Modules” below. Does that give you a clue as to what may be going on?

-Tom

Hi Tom,

You’re welcome, it’s an interesting little puzzle you’ve got here :slightly_smiling_face:

It means that you aren’t having the issue I thought it might be, which is good, at least we’ve ruled out the worst likely scenario…

Can you create a new page and drop the same module on the page from the left sidebar (create a new one, even if it is included in the template) and see if the issue persists? You can try dropping a new module on the same page, but this way it will identify two possible causes in one test.

Hi again, Jennifer,

Just tried creating (yet another) new page, using the template “Home Blank Canvas” from FreeFlex theme. Added a two-column module in a new section, and the result is the usual Lorem Ipsum gibberish in both of the columns, neither of them possible to edit :open_mouth:

Nothing more than a button in the module editor pointing to an editor in “Expanded view” (taking up the whole area to the right of the left-hand editing panel), but still no possibility to actually edit anything.

What’s also intriguing is that when i click through the three buttons the expanded view area seems to reveal a hidden area below the heading for a flash, before returning to the (now) usual non-editable state.

Hi again Tom,

I would suggest doing a screenrecording of what you described and sharing it with the agency and HubSpot Support.

Here is what I can see with FreeFlex using the 2 column content module

Thanks a lot, Jennifer, I really appreciate your engagement and effort!

This is truly helpful – it’s apparently some bug in our - and our client’s - accounts, preventing us from seeing any editor. Just off a Zoom meeting w/HS Support, and they experienced the exact same thing as me/us, so I guess it’s not a constant issue, and more intermittent of a kind  This, of course, also makes it a nightmare to debug…

@tbenjaminsen happy to help, I only wish I had better news for you!

I’m glad seeing what I can see helped get you closer to a resolution, hopefully now HubSpot can find a solution. If HS Support needs access to my account to test my version of the theme compared to yours, you can have them reach out to me directly (DM me if needed).

So, as out of thin air, things are working normally with the editor again. Don’t know what, who and how, but both me and our client are happy editing content the way it was intended.
(Okay, maybe not completely out of thin air, I had a conversation with HS Support on Friday, maybe that did the trick :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:).

-Tom

I’m so happy to hear it is working again! Wish you all the best @tbenjaminsen with the rest of the project!

Hello @tbenjaminsen,

I hope your issue is now resolved. If not can you please share a screen recording so that my teammate can have a detailed look at the issue you’re facing and provide you with a solution

Regards,
