Data enrichment challenges from Apollo.io

I know this is probably an Apollo forum topic but looking for help here too…

We recently onboarded Apollo.io primarily for CRM enrichment to help with better lead qualification and segmentation. The biggest task for me right now is enriching incorrect or unknown industry values in our Hubspot.

The issue I am facing is that Hubspot’s default Industry field is a dropdown pre-populated with all possible industries. If I try to enrich this from Apollo, it does nothing because I don’t think it can enrich to a dropdown but only an open text field. I know this sounds obvious but it’s something I clearly missed when making a decision to give the platform a try.

Does anyone have any suggestions how to do this? A possible fix is creating another company-level Hubspot field called ‘Industry (Apollo data)’, porting all industry values using a workflow and then enriching them from Hubspot. All this is possible but then when I have to reconcile the 2 industry fields in Hubspot I am still stuck with a challenge.

Any help is appreciated! Thanks in advance

Hey @RMenezes, thank you for posting in our Community!

One potential solution, as you mentioned, is to create a new custom field in HubSpot specifically for industry data enriched by Apollo.io. This approach allows you to preserve the original Industry field while incorporating the enriched data in a separate field.

I want to invite our top experts, @Anton , @Jnix284, and @mangelet do you have any recommendations for @RMenezes?

Thank you,

Pam

@RMenezes you could create the custom Apollo Industry property in the background and then use a custom coded workflow to match up the industries with the default dropdown properties.

Hi @Jnix284,
Would this still be the best way to enrich CRM properties that are not open text fields with Apollo data?
We’re currently exploring an Apollo.io subscription, but right now we’re on a free trial, and I’m trying to enrich some of the data via CSV import rather than automatic CRM enrichment to have a bit more control over the data that is updated.
Thanks so much!

@CC_x there are a lot of things that have changed over the last year because of AI, for example, if you want a little more control via CSV you could try the Google Sheets Connector.

I fully agree that you should enrich your contact data outside of the CRM before importing the information you have collected. There are several interesting ways to do this.

I suggest creating an “Enrichment Environment” outside of your CRM to orchestrate and enhance your contacts while also tracking signals.

Here are several options:

1. Clay.com: This could be your best choice, as it offers native CRM integration. However, it may be a bit expensive.

2. Freckle: This option provides native integration at a lower cost, but you might have access to fewer data points for testing.

3. Linkup API + Google Sheets: This is a very affordable option, but it requires additional operational work. In this case, you’ll also need a tool like Zapier or N8N to integrate the data.

Let me know if you would like to discuss this further; I’d be happy to provide examples.

Ultimately, it all depends on the specific data you are looking to collect.

@CC_x we built a system that enables you to do the enrichment, basic or advanced laser focused directly in HubSpot, without moving data out and then back in. What kind of data would you like to enrich?
I’m happy to share some of the learnings about different approaches that we see with other HubSpot users

A more permanent solution is to change your default industry property to a single-line text type.

1. Create a placeholder property

2. copy values from drop down to placeholder via workflow

3. clear values from companies where the drop down is known

4. Change property type from drop down to single line text

5. copy values from placeholder back to your default.

note: this field needs to be not used in anything in order to change the field type I believe

We recently launched a native HubSpot contact enrichment agent, that in the first step, take contact level information you have in HubSpot (gathered from form submissions for example) to find the right LinkedIn profile and then pulls the information from LinkedIn to contact properties (job title and others).
It seems you have decided on Apollo already, but if you would be interested to see how it works, you can try it out here: https://enrichment.sellestial.com/

This is indeed a big limitation of Apollo

Do you want to follow Apollo categorization , Hubspot Categorization or your own categorization?

One way how we solved that challenge for one of the users is by developing the mapping between HubSpot default values in the property and Linkedin industries. In the same way you could tackle it for Apollo industries. And AI can help making the mapping nicely.
