Capturing first form submission on Multi-Step forms

Hello, I’m working on creating a two-step form. The idea is to present a set of questions in the first form, have the lead submit it, and then prompt them with a second set of questions that ties back to the initial submission.
I attempted to use a multi-step form for this, but I ran into an issue where both steps must be completed before the form can be submitted. Ideally, I would like the second step to be related to the first one.
Is that possible?

Hi @JIllescas,

If you want the first part to be submitted, then the second, you would have to use two separate forms – one of the main reasons being that for a submission to be stored, as far as I know, the contact must consent to their data being processed. I’m not a legal expert (and this reply does not constitute legal advice), however, to my knowledge it is not permissible to simply capture and process information before the fact.

That’s why, I believe, even in a multi-step-form, HubSpot will only create the submission data in the CRM once all steps are completed. While it’s possible to move the consent text to the first step, HubSpot still doesn’t create the submission until full completion. (In this case, one could request from HubSpot that the submission is preliminarily created directly after accepting the consent notice. You could do so in the HubSpot Ideas section of the community: https://community.hubspot.com/t5/HubSpot-Ideas/idb-p/HubSpot_Ideas.)

For now, you would have to use two separate forms, each of which should ask for the email address to make sure that they’re correctly identified in HubSpot. Theoretically, you could rely on the cookies set in the browser of the visitor to associate the second without an email address field, but this will lead to orphan submissions for any contact who simply does not accept cookies or uses privacy extensions.

Hope this helps!

@JIllescas - I’m doing the same thing you are and have separate forms that are linked together.

I solved this by using Gravity Forms instead. GF let you pass information like name and email between forms easily. Better yet, you can hide those fields so that the visitor only sees the additional questions. In my case it’s “how did you hear about us?” All the information from the forms can be passed to HS.

HS has made some improvements to its forms, but, unfortunately, they are still far behind other options out there.
