Bulk Delete Email Addresses

Is there really no way to bulk remove email addresses from contacts? Even bounced ones?
Tried both by uploading and using a workflow and neither worked.

Hi @nychd,

If you don’t mind my curiousity, why would you want to remove email addresses from contacts? While HubSpot does allow you to create contacts without an email address, the email address is the unique identifier to deduplicate contacts and contact them. It appears you can also delete manually on the contact record but I understand you’re looking to do so in bulk.

Have you tried creating a list or view of these contacts and then editing the email field for all selected and simply adding a space so it appears to be unknown/deleted? That’s the best workaround that initially comes to me.

Otherwise, if you’re looking to remove email addresses so you don’t communicate with those specific contacts, I’d recommend adding them to a list and using that list as a suppression in your email communications.

If you’re leveraging the marketing vs. non-marketing contact functionality, it may also make sense to move these sorts of contacts to a non-marketing status.

I hope this helps.

I can answer this from our perspective. We are an association management organization and are constantly working with our members to update their rosters (contacts associated with the company). Often these are hundreds of contacts. I was recently informed of 233 contacts who were no longer with a company. I want to mass delete their email addresses since they no longer work there. We like to keep the contact records to keep a trail of that person’s engagement with us over the years because they often times end up working for another one of our member companies down the road. Our process is to update the existing contact with no email rather than create a new contact as that creates duplicates in the system. I wish we were able to clear out the contact details including email addresses through the import process by utilizing the record ID vs. email in cases like this.

Hi @HHopkins1 ,

Thanks for jumping in here! To help you get the best response from our community, I’d suggest starting a fresh thread instead of adding to this older conversation.

Since this is an older post, I think this is a perfect moment to start a new conversation! A fresh post will get much better visibility - more eyes on it means better chances of finding someone with the perfect solution for you!

This also looks like it could be great product feedback or a suggestion - definitely check out our ideas forum for that. That’s where our product team hangs out and reads through real customer use cases.

Plus, other community members can jump in and upvote if they’re facing the same challenges.

Either way, feel free to tag me when you post - I’m always happy to help you get the conversation started!

Best, Victor

You could probably make a List from those 233 names, then create a branched workflow that said if they belong to the list to Clear the Email property, and if they don’t belong to the list to end/do nothing. Good luck!

@nychd If you want to change email addresses in bulk, You can export all contacts in CSV or Excel file, remove email addresses and then add the new emails. But not sure if it’s possible to remove it in bulk because email is a required property

Yeah, this is what I ran into as well

I’m running into this issue, as well, @nychd. I have 1,500+ accounts that I need to delete email addresses for, and no way of doing it in bulk. They resulted from an integration with another system that allows to there to be a John Smith (active) and the same person (archived) with the same email address. The other system’s unique identifier has been a number, not an email. And though I’ve had the archived emails removed from the integrating system, now that the emails are in HubSpot I cannot remove them unless I do all 1,500+ manually. I understand safeguards, but there should be some way for a super admin to do this!

And why is this a big deal? The emails attached to an ARCHIVED account are preventing the ACTIVE accounts from flowing through the integration, since they have duplicate emails, so I’m unable to get 1,500 active accounts into HubSpot until I fix this. <sigh>

My heart goes out.

For me ~200 or so was annoying, but mindless work I could while listening to a podcast or whatever. For you that would be a much larger time waste.

Is there any update on this?? When will this feature be available ? Thanks!
