Update Module in Child Theme

Hello All,
Our site runs on a child them that we setup and had a custom module written for. Everything works great, but I noticed an update to our theme from the developer that allows for some new functionality in one of the modules that I would love to implement.
How exactly do I go about updating one module in my child theme without having to update the entire theme? I have never needed to make updates to a child theme before outside of my own customizations.

Hi @UFP_Packaging I’m happy to help with your question about how child themes work relative to updates.

When you have a @marketplace theme and you’re working with a child theme, the relationship works like this:

1 - any file overwritten in the child theme (has same name as marketplace file) will not receive updates

2 - any file that doesn’t exist in the child theme (only in marketplace file) will receive updates

3 - any custom file in the child theme (unique file name not in marketplace theme) will not be impacted.

There is no option to update a single module from a theme, but updating the theme to the latest version via marketplace downloads will apply the updates as noted above.

If you would like updates to be applied from the marketplace to a file that’s overwritten in the child theme, that would need to be done manually by comparing the new code with your custom code, checking the fields, etc.

If you’ve overwritte CSS or JS files from the marketplace theme in the child theme (not recommended), then you’d also have to manually verify changes to make sure everything works properly.
