This type error usually points to a permissions hiccup during the Google OAuth flow. Are you able to confirm that you’re attempting this connect from: Settings > General > Email? (as seen here)
A couple of resources that may help while we loop in some community members:
I haven’t seen that error specifically, but just to make sure, are you trying to connect your Gmail to HubSpot (the steps in the first article in stassey’s reply) or are you setting up the Google Contacts app? If it’s the latter, note that you must be a Super Admin or have App Marketplace permissions in your HubSpot account to connect the app.
That error is usually an OAuth consent mismatch, not HubSpot “forgetting” the checkbox.
Quick split first: are you connecting Gmail under Settings → General → Email (personal inbox), or installing the Google Contacts / Google app from the marketplace? Those use different permission sets. Marketplace apps also need a Super Admin (or App Marketplace permission) in HubSpot.
If it’s the inbox connect:
On the Google account, revoke HubSpot access (Google Account → Security → Third-party access), then reconnect from an incognito window and make sure you tick every HubSpot-requested scope, including Contacts if HubSpot asks for it.
Confirm you pick the same Google account in the OAuth screen that you intend to use in HubSpot.
If this is a Google Workspace mailbox, check Admin → Apps → Google Workspace Marketplace / third-party access. Admins often block Contacts or force an allowlist, which produces exactly this “permissions weren’t selected” message even when the user clicked Allow.
Avoid connecting while dual-logged into multiple Google accounts; that is a common silent fail.
If you can say personal Gmail vs Workspace, and inbox vs Contacts app, the next check gets obvious fast.
