Tracking CTA clicks per page

We have a handful of CTA PopUps that appear on multiple pages. I need to be able to report on which pages are leading to the most clicks on the various CTAs/PopUps, regardless of whether or not a person fills out the form on the page they arrive at after clicking the CTA.

Concrete scenario to imagine this better:

  • We have a pop up to sign up for our newsletter, that leads to a landing page on which there is a form (form is NOT in the pop up itself and this will not change)
  • This same pop up appears on several pages on our website - e.g. on a variety of blogposts and/or relevant landingpages
  • I need to see which pages are generating the most clicks on the popup, regardless of if a conversion via the later form happens or not

I’ve tried managing this via custom reports, but I don’t seem to be able to get the results I want / also can’t find this exact issue in the community.

Does anyone have any tips? Is this easily measurable in Hubspot?

We are enterprise users and I am a super-admin, so there is no question about my ability to access information/features.

Gerne nehme ich auch Hilfe auf Deutsch an!

Hey @kate_unite,

Thanks for bringing this to the community and for all the details!

A couple things worth exploring are the CTA Analytics report in HubSpot, and the Traffic Analytics tool to cross-reference page-level data. Custom behavioral events may also be worth looking into at the Enterprise tier.

These resources might be a helpful starting point:

Tagging in a few community experts who may have tackled something similar:

Hey @danmoyle, @CarolinaDeMares, @Liana_Preston – do you have any suggestions for @kate_unite on this?

Thanks in advance!!

Hi Sam, thanks for the quick response. I’ve reviewed these resources already in my search but am still coming up empty for my particular case.

Will continue looking into the custom report options, but if any of the tagged experts have any resources for generally tracking the number of CTA clicks per page, regardless of conversion or existence of a related contact, that would be great.

Eventually we’d put this information together with the attributed form fills in order to see where the CTA looks like it’s performing better via clicks but which (types of) pages are more likely to lead to conversion. Again, we use the same CTA on a handful of pages via the targeting so we can compare it to a different CTA (for which we want to do the same thing).

Thanks in advance to the others as well!

Hi @kate_unite, Yes, this is measurable. One option is to report on CTA clicks by page URL rather than form submissions. Have you tried creating a custom report using CTA clicks as the primary metric and Page URL/Page path as the breakdown? That should show which pages are driving the most CTA clicks, regardless of whether the visitor completes the form.

Hi @TeeTech , looks like this is getting me much closer. Thank you so much! I had not selected CTA-Activity as the primary data source before.

Hey @kate_unite. Have you worked in the new-ish Customer Journey Reports? I actually asked Breeze Assistant about this and found the solution intriguing.

If you need this across multiple CTAs/popups and want more flexibility, use Reports and create a customer journey report.

HubSpot documents that:

  • CTA clicks can be used as journey steps
  • CTA click tracking can include anonymous visitors
  • CTA filters include Content ID, which represents the content page where the CTA is embedded

How to build it:

  1. Go to Reports and create a Customer journey report.
  2. Use Contacts as the data source if you want content/journey analysis with anonymous visitor inclusion. HubSpot’s example flow explicitly uses Include anonymous visitors.
  3. Add a stage for CTA clicks. HubSpot documents CTA clicks as a supported journey step and says it supports anonymous visitors.
  4. Filter that CTA-click stage by the specific CTA guid or CTA name equivalent, and use Content ID to isolate the pages where that CTA is embedded .
  5. If useful, add later stages such as Form submission to compare “clicks by source page” versus “eventual conversions.”

This makes sense to me, because the only other path I would think to try is to create a separate CTA for each placement or page group. This could give you granular reporting at the CTA level, but is not scalable. There’s also technical options of custom click instrumentation or using a UTM or query-parameter workaround to give each placement a different destination URL. But those both seem like a heavier lift. So if it were me, I’d try to build customer journey reporting to answer the question “Which pop up CTA placement is driving the most submissions.”

Glad that helped @kate_unite, the key was using CTA Activity as the primary data source. From there, breaking down by Page URL / Page path will show which pages generated the click, even if the visitor never completes the form on the landing page.

One extra tip: if you have multiple popups or CTAs, add CTA name as a secondary breakdown so you can compare performance by both page and CTA in the same report.
