Time zone Query

We are using the Time Zone drop down provided by Hubspot on our contacts.

I wanted to find out how does Hubspot determine what Timezone a contact is in? We have seen some anomalies, for example, we have a UK contact, and their timezone has been autopopulated to “UTC -07:00 America Los Angeles”.

Any input would be much appreciated.

Hi @SThatcroos,

HubSpot has two time zone properties:

  • IP time zone: the timezone reported by the contact’s IP address. This is automatically set by HubSpot and can be used for segmentation and reporting. This property is used to determine the contact’s time zone for the time zone send email feature.
  • Time zone: the contact’s time zone, set manually by selecting a pre-defined time zone. The property’s options are static and do not update based on daylight savings time. There will be an hour difference for certain time zones from November to March.

If you’re referring to the second, could you share a screenshot of the property history? View a record's property history

Best regards

@karstenkoehler thank you for your swift response and providing insight into the IP Time Zone too.

Here is the screenshot of the property history:

@SThatcroos the property history suggests that HubSpot uses the IP address to determine the time zone.

This can show as incorrect when employees as a company use a VPN - which would camouflage the actual IP and location of a contact.

That’s why I’d recommend taking this as a data point but not being reliant on it.

Hope that clarifies things!

Hey @SThatcroos

there are a lot of properties that gather information from the IP address.

But as some companies or internet providers have dynamic ip addresses

or people could travel and navigate your web from different countries

this could lead to mistakes when planning your actions.

I’d suggest that you set this up manually or ask for this information if its crucial for your comunications.

Hope this helps
