when importing states it defaults to the full state name, is it possible to have this state field on contacts default to abbreviated name? or does this have to be done via workflow. We do alot of imports from different data sources so its no real way to enforce that these are being imported correctly.

Currently, you would be limited to the property options as they’re pre-populated in the property settings. With that said, though, your best workaround would be to set up a custom property containing the abbreviations of each state. You would then use that property when importing new data. If your state field is a single-line text, then this would indeed require a workflow.
Alternatively, consider setting it up as a dropdown property. During the import, when someone maps the dropdown property, they’ll see an error to map their free text input to the existing dropdown options.
(There is no feature which automatically cleans this up for you, no.)
