We work with a lot of organizaitons that have relationsihps that are not parent-child and need to be able to track that better than a custom property. I would like to be able to create association types between organizations. ex: Partner/School

I don’t believe this is possible with the currently released features, although it looks like the same-object association beta that HubSpot just announced may allow for this, although I am not 100% sure as I haven’t had a chance to test it out. They do, however, mention “Partners” as a potential company-to-company association option in the article there, so there may be additional features for custom labels.
You can use association labels to tag the relationship type between other record types, but not with companies as far as I know. I believe the only available tags are for child and parent companies, unless the beta mentioned above allows for that.
However, until those features are available, you could use a custom field like “Association Types” to tag Partner/School through a Workflow. Then, you could use the standard parent/child associations to connect the companies in the DB, or forego that completely and use another customer field for “Associated Companies” if using the parent/child setup will make it too confusing.
Also, just wanted to mention that Insycle can help identify association matches and update custom fields automatically in the scenario above. Full disclosure — I work for Insycle, so grain of salt at the recommendation here :). You create your template in Insycle, then inject it into HubSpot workflows, so that companies that meet certain criteria have their custom fields automatically tagged. We also have really deep HubSpot association features that you may find helpful — match associations using any field, advanced matching (exact vs. similar and other advanced options for ignoring portion of fields), match using related fields (phone number vs mobile phone number), match using existing associations (if contacts are associated to a company and a deal, associate that company to deal as well).
