When prospecting I’d like to be able to fill in Company first, not Name, when creating a contact. How is this done?
Otherwise, to start the contact record you have to enter xx or the like, into the Name field, then save it, then go back into it to add Company. Too many steps.

While not wrong, that approach isn’t really aligned to how HubSpot is built.
If you want to track companies you are prosepcting against before you know the people there, you really want to be creating HubSpot company records before contact records. The Company field on the contact record is useful as a place for them to put that information, when submitting a form for example, but not much else.
The approach you desicribe is actually close to the two-contact object struture of systems like Salesforce or Dynamics. In those systems, leads are combine contact and company information on one record for fast prospecting, and get converted into contact and company records later.
