Prevent Merged Contact From Exiting Workflow

I recently had a contact exit an automated workflow because their contact record was merged with a duplicate (two different emails).

What is a good way to have this contact continue in the workflow without interruption or will this always happen by default?

Hey @pahy96 contact records go through workflows, if a contact is merged in HubSpot it will mean there is one single contact left, meaning only 1 contact could go through the workflow.

There would be no way to merge 2 contacts, then have the original, non-merged contacts go through the workflow at the same time.

Is it possible to merge those records and keep the primary contact who is in the workflow still moving through it? Or, is it seen as a new contact record altogether as a result of the merging?

Having this issue as well. Customer support told me to upvote this post so hopefully a solution is given to us sooner rather than later.

yes, please give us a solution!

Hey @CKuk-Jansen, @tylerdeion, Happy Friday!
Thanks so much for taking the time to share your feedback with us!
I’ve noticed a similar idea already present in our Ideas Forum: Objects (Contacts) Unenrolled from Workflows due to Merge.
To contribute, you can upvote the existing idea and share more details about your specific use case in the comments.
I can see on this Idea a workaround that @gilian shared (thank you!):
“My workaround was a event-triggered workflow where if a Contact unenrolls from specific workflows and their merge IDs property was updated in the last 1 day (i.e. it was merged recently), it sends me an alert to manually review. Not the most ideal scenario but good for now until this hopefully gets rectified.”
You might want to give it a try!
Thank you and have a lovely weekend!
