Multi-Contacts, Same Email

Hi!

I am trying to load a couple contacts from a doctor’s office but they have the same email. I get a message saying “hold the phone! It looks like a contact with that email address already exists” and it will not let me create the second contact.

Do I need to make up an email to bypass this message or is there a way to add multiple contacts with the same email?

Thank you guys so much for your time and help!!

Hi @Hannah-Hukill,

The same email address cannot be used across multiple contact. The email address is the unique identifier in HubSpot. Whenever a form is submitted or data imported, HubSpot deduplicates by email address.

There are some potential workarounds discussed in this thread: Two contacts, 1 email address

One option would also be adding these contacts without email address and pinning a note to the contact record. This note could include the email address or simply state that all contact from the company are sharing the same email address.

Best regards!

Sounds good. Thank you so much for your help, Karsten!

Hey!
There is a workaround Karsten didn’t mention.
You can just place a “+1” infront of the email and then it also gets sent to the right adresser/you can have the same email on different contacts. have different first/ last names / enroll them via workflow and sent it to the one email adress that you saved across the different contacts
The Emailadress would still contain the +1 but it would go to the right email like you see below:

So it would look like this:
1. anna@email.com
2.anna+1@email.com
You can create/automate this in a workflow by splitting emails up into two parts (properties) and putting them then back together.

Hi! I’m wondering if something changed. I used to do this but can’t now…

Hi @KDisrud,
Thank you for posting to the Community!
At this time, it is not possible to have multiple contacts with the same email because the field acts as a unique identifier for de-duplicating contacts. However, Karsten mentioned a workaround from this thread in the Accepted Solution.
In addition to that, you could create a custom property for additional emails. With this workaround, you would have your main email field (created by Hubspot) and then a custom property for any additional emails.
I hope this helps!
