Hi all,
I am trying to decipher the difference between Direct and Email marketing in HS. Outside of HS I understand the differences between the two but when I look at the data it’s confusing.
We ran a campaign directing users to a landing page with the form. So outside of natural discovery, the possible sources are Email, Social and potential link sharing.
Is it counting people who click the link in social or email as direct too? It feels like there is overlap with the source tracking.
Note: landing page link in the email was tagged with utm code but I see the campaign name coming up under Email AND Other campaigns.
Hi @AAmanulla
This article explains the various sources and how they are set.
Have you made any changes to HubSpot’s default email tracking settings? If not, these will append the following utm parameters to links in emails:
Regardless of which social tool you are using, most of them add the appropriate tracking as well. According to HubSpot the “Other campaigns” bucket is assigned when "The “utm_source”, “utm_medium”, “utm_campaign”, or “source” parameter is present and does not contain the word “email”, “adword”, “ppc”, or “cpc”.
From my own experience in the past, I have see that either manually creating tracking URLs are often the biggest source for this.
I hope that helps. Let me know if you have more questions.
Frank
Thanks, Frank. This is helpful. I have not made changes to the default email tracking settings, and like you said. we used utm codes, which is why the redundancy is taking place. So essentially, if we are linking to a Hubspot form or from an HS email (with default settings), there is already tracking in place.
In what cases would creating a UTM code be beneficial then? Is it paid search only?
Thanks, Frank. This is helpful. Our utm codes are redundant with the email and social tracking then.
In what cases would we use utm codes with Hubspot then? Is it paid search specific?
