Automatic Company Number Formatting

In order to improve data quality, avoid duplicate records, and facilitate accurate company identification, it would be highly valuable to implement a standardized format for company numbers in HubSpot, based on the country of incorporation.

For European companies, integration with the VIES (VAT Information Exchange System) could be used to validate and format VAT numbers in accordance with EU standards. For non-European countries, similar formatting rules could be applied based on national company number formats (e.g., EIN for the U.S., ABN for Australia, etc.).

Benefits:

  • Improved duplicate detection: A standardized company number can serve as a reliable and unique identifier across records.
  • Data consistency: Enforcing country-specific formatting rules ensures clean and structured data.
  • Faster data enrichment and validation: Company numbers can be used to enrich records via third-party databases and validate existing data.
  • Enhanced CRM usability: Sales and operations teams benefit from easier company lookup, segmentation, and deduplication processes.

Suggested Implementation:

  • Automatically detect the country based on the “Country” or “Company Address” field.
  • Apply formatting and validation rules to the “Company Number” or “VAT Number” property based on the country.
  • Provide error or warning messages for incorrect formats.
  • Optionally, enrich the company record with verified legal entity information using the company number.

This feature would significantly enhance CRM hygiene, streamline sales operations, and support better compliance with legal and tax requirements in international markets.
