SWOT

Hello,

I’m just starting out on my Content Strategy journey. I have not dedicated a lot of time in creating content.

I am wondering how I would use SWOT to begin a content strategy plan?

Thank you

Hi @SWegner,

I would challenge whether it makes sense to use a SWOT analysis as the starting point for building a content strategy, given that you are new to creating content and have not invested much time in it yet. That is a fair question because SWOT is often taught as a go-to planning tool, but in the specific world of content strategy it is not always the most common or even the most useful first step. Many content strategists focus instead on understanding their audience, clarifying business goals, and doing competitor or keyword research before anything else.

That does not mean SWOT has no value. It can help you take stock of yourself and the environment you are working in, which can be grounding if you are feeling uncertain. But you should see it as one optional tool rather than a required framework. If it helps you think about what you can offer and where challenges might be, use it. If you find it forces you into boxes that don’t lead to concrete action, then set it aside and spend more time getting to know your audience and aligning your content with clear objectives. Content strategy is ultimately about focus and execution, and SWOT is only worthwhile if it gives you more clarity on those two things.

Hope this helps!

yes, it helped me.

Based on my experience, SWOT is better to use as a post-review framework for your content marketing strategy. This would help you identify keypoints on how to make your future contents better.

As earlier suggested, you can start by understanding your target audience. Once you understand them, you will have a clearer idea on the relevant contents you should be working on.
