I am getting somewhat frustrated with understanding how original source information gets updated for contacts added as offline sources.
I have been told that the prospect must fill in a form after they have been added to HubSpot and as long as the original tracking cookie remains on the browser they open the form in and they enter the same email that is in Hubspot then the previous cookie data will be associated with their record and the original source info will update from “offline sources” to “whatever was in the cookie data”
I have been told that identity-tracking links are not enough and that the customer must fill in a form.
This, however, seem to directly contradict what the hubspot help post says (link below). The six steps in the scenario outlined are more or less exactly what I want to happen. But I have been told that a tracking link wont do the job, despite it clearly saying in step 4 (see below and link).
Can someone clarify this please as it’s driving me and my marketing manager mad. We seem to be getting conflicting advice from HubSpot support and the HubSpot literature.
- In March, a visitor lands on your site for the first time by clicking a Google search result. HubSpot sets tracking cookies in their browser.
- They browse a few pages on your site, but do not submit a form. HubSpot tracks their site activity using cookies and can identify them as the same visitor if they revisit your site. However, the visitor is not yet a contact in your HubSpot CRM.
- In July, they are imported as a contact from a CSV file. This sets their Original source as Offline sources.
- In September, the contact either:
- submits a form on your site, or
- is sent an email from your HubSpot account and clicks a link in the email that goes to your site.
- HubSpot associates the contact with their previous site activity:
- the contact’s tracking cookies are passed through the form submission, or
- identity tracking from the links in your HubSpot emails, along with the tracking cookies already set in their browser.
