Can I safely move all of my articles from two different categories into a new (third) category without breaking existing links to them?
Hi @AHenry74,
Thank you for posting to the Community!
I’d like to tag in some of our Community Champions to see if they have any tips on this -- @danmoyle @Bryantworks @beeginman I hope you all are having a great Tuesday! Do any of you all have any ideas on moving articles from one category to another without breaking the existing link?
Cassie, Community Manager
Hey there @AHenry74. Yes, in HubSpot CMS (Content Hub), moving articles between categories is safe and won’t break existing links. Article URLs aren’t affected by category changes unless you’ve specifically changed the URL in the article editor. In HubSpot’s documentation, you’ll find details on how moving articles to a different category only changes the organizational structure, not the published URL of the article.
A few tips to keep in mind:
- Bulk moving is manual. Unfortunatley, there’s no built-in bulk move feature, so you’ll need to “move” each article individually (in other words, you’ll change each tag).
- Links do stay valid. As long as you don’t physically edit the URL, search engines and users will still reach the correct articles after the move.
- Update any navigation and display paths. While the article’s URL remains unchanged, its location in category navigation and breadcrumbs will be updated to reflect the new category structure.
I hope that helps!
Thanks for the insights @danmoyle!
You’re welcome, @AHenry74 happy to (hopefully) help the Community!
Hi @AHenry74
Yes, you can move your articles into a new category without breaking existing links.
Categories in HubSpot’s Knowledge Base are just a way of organizing content for readers; they don’t change the actual article URL unless you go into the article editor and manually change the slug.
So, when you move articles into a new category, the article links that have already been shared or indexed will continue to work normally
(Manage knowledge base categories, subcategories, and tags )
What does change is the breadcrumb trail and the navigation path inside your knowledge base, which will automatically reflect the new category.
One limitation is that HubSpot doesn’t have a bulk move tool for knowledge base categories. You’ll need to open each article and switch the category in the editor.
It’s a bit manual, but it ensures URLs remain stable. Once you’ve reassigned everything, double-check any menus, custom modules, or topic listings you may be using on your site to confirm they point to the new category. This avoids confusion for visitors who browse through categories rather than direct links (documentation on editing articles here: (Create and customize knowledge base articles )
So the short answer: moving categories won’t hurt SEO or shared links, as long as you don’t alter URLs directly. The bigger job is simply the manual reassignment.
If you rely on external systems that also reference your categories or navigation, that’s where a sync can help Stacksync, for instance, keeps HubSpot categories and structures aligned with your other tools in real time so you’re not chasing mismatches later. Hope that clears it up.
