We store payment methods for our invoices. I created an invoice for a contact we already have a saved payment method. The invoice had a future due date from when it was created/opened. When the due date arrived the invoice was not automatically paid. In the UI I can use the menu “Charge payment method” however. My question: is there a way to have invoices charge payment automatically when due. And if not, is there an automation (task or custom code action/API) that I can use to charge the payment method on the due date.
I can’t really use Subscriptions if you are thinking of a workaround. First, we have variable invoice structure. Think 20% discount year 1, 15% disocunt year 2, 8% discount year 3, no dicount year 4. In today’s Hubspot I would have to make 4 subscpriptions. Secondarily, we may want to push back a due date on say year 2 because client asked for more time. We need the flexibilty of using standalone invoices, but (ideally) still be able to charge the stored payment method automatically vs manually in the UI.

More control around invoicing and programmatically billing the card on file would be huge, particularly within Subscriptions.
I totally agree that, for my business, a major limitation around subscriptions is the fixed billing date. Allowing creation of a subscription with more customization around exactly when a card on file is billed would be huge.
For example, for my business (a service business), it is best to bill once the service is performed. These services are still on subscriptions, but the exact date of service is not always set in stone in advance. The service may be on the 5th of one month then the 9th of the next month. It’s a safe assumption that the customer does not expect or want to be billing until the service has been completed.
Perhaps not the exact same use case as @darveesh , but a lot of overlap on the controls desired.
Here’s a better summary of what would be very valuable in both of our cases:
- Generally speaking, ability to trigger billing the card on file via API. This would be broadly usable, and I think it’s a fair claim that this could absolutely be permitted in a scalable and secure way, with clear limitations and safeguards.
- For an existing Subscription object, having the ability to issue invoice and bill the existing payment method on variable dates. (eg. even if a technically a “monthly subscription”, being able to invoice and automatically bill on changing days of the month, via the API)
Subscriptions are a massive value unlock for businesses on Hubspot, although for service businesses like mine it can be a bit too boxed. I assume more control / flexibility will eventually be given around these objects. What I’d love to know is if this is something that can be done within the next month or next year, in which case we’d have to find an alternative. Big difference between the two.
