The feature below, while useful for many situation, also causes many a headache.
When a new contact is being created within an existing company and the email domain doesn’t match that of the existing company
- A duplicate company is created
- The duplicate company is associated to the new contact as the primary company
- The original company is associated to the contact as the secondary (non-primary) company
(Email domain not matching the website domain is extremely common --especially in the SMB space where gmail addresses are rampant).
There are many reasons we would still prefer to keep this setting ON however there is not enough flexibility within this feature to avoid this issue and require duplicate cleansing.
Current Workaround:
When creating a contact with an email address that does not match the companies website domain, create contact without an email so no automatic association is made. Then retroactively add in the email address to the contact.
Idea to improve this feature:
Introduce a popup/modal during contact creation that enables the user to select which option makes sense for the situation:
- It doesn’t look like this contact’s domain matches any existing company! Would you like to:
- Create a new company to associate with this contact
- Do not create a new company, just associate contact to existing company
(Even just a yes/no when submitting contact would work: would you like to automatically associate this contact to other companies? etc.)
