Contacts are categorized in HubSpot with contact properties. You can think of these properties as tags. Properties can have different types and they can be used in lists for filtering. In your case, we’ll use a property to “mark” a contact as a certain contact type. You can then build lists accordingly.
One option would be the existing Persona property. Here is an instruction for how to set this property up: Create and edit personas. If you set up this property with values “Investor”, “Advisor” etc., you can then assign this persona to your contacts. There are different ways to do this, either by manually updating each contact, or updating contacts in bulk. (For example, if you have an Excel file of investors, an import would be the best option. If you have a small number, manual editing is probably the way to go.) In case of the Persona, HubSpot should automatically create lists in the background for each persona. You can find these under Menu > Contacts > Lists.
Alternatively, if you don’t think the Persona property is suitable, you can also create your own custom property, e.g. Contact type. This would probably be a dropdown select property. The same steps from above apply then: update your contacts (one by one or in bulk), then create a list for investors by filtering for “Persona is equal to any of Investor”, and repeat for the other types.
Karsten, I think the user is also interested in if you can have different properties in the side bar based on contact type (which is also my question).
