I am testing sequences by sending them to myself and my family members. I have created 2 sequences. Both sequences are sending ONE email and then unenrolling contact saying “replied” even though the receivers have not replied, do not have an auto-reply and the email is not being sent to spam.
As I continue to try, one of the sequences is working for my personal email but continues to prematurely end for the other two emails which are Gmail accounts but are business accounts and not personal. I have tried to create the sequence thread with both “reply to” and “new thread”.
Can you please help me understand why the sequnces continue to unenroll my contacts even though they are not replying nor are they setting a meeting with me?
Hey, @VLopez94. Thank you for posting in our Community!
I want to share this knowledge base with more information about creating and editing sequences.
Could you please provide more details on the specific settings you’ve configured for each sequence? This includes any conditions or triggers you’ve set that might be affecting the unenrollment process. Additionally, please confirm the exact steps you’ve taken when setting up the sequences.
Hi Pam,
Thanks for your reply. As far as I can tell the triggers are set to stop an
email to that particular contact only when the contact replies or sets a
meeting. Neither of these is taking place and it is still stopping. I have
attached a photo of the automation triggers. Are there other settings at
which I should be looking? I can also share that I am part of an
organization and the permission holder’s account can send sequences. I am
not sure which subscription I have but as I understood it, sequences are
possible even with the free edition. Also as I understand it,
conditions are only allowed with workflows or with a higher level
subscription. Is this correct? I am new.
It seems that the owner of the business I work for is able to make these
sequences work in the same way I am trying to. Another point I want to
reiterate is that for some reason the whole sequence is working on only one
of the test subjects that I have tried. All the others show “stopped:
contact replied”. Which, again, they have not replied. I know this because
they are family members.
Thanks for your help and let me know if you need any other information.
When you go to the contact record for the family members that show replied, do you see any activity on their records (despite them not having actually replied)?
Does the email there show that they opened? or also that they replied?
I apologize but I had replied to this post weeks back and I am not sure why it didn’t go through. I will respond again in hopes that we can solve this problem. None of the automated email chains have worked except ONE. Which was to my personal gmail (seen under the enrolled contact as Vanessa). The other emails were gmail or Yahoo accounts.
You can see from the picture it says that these people have replied to the chain and so the chain status is FINISHED. However, none of them replied or had an auto reply. One of them never even opened the emails and it still says they replied. Can you please help me understand why HubSpot thinks these contacts have replied and is prematurely finishing the email chain?
Thanks for the screenshot - can you open one of the records for Marcus or Victor that show replied in the sequence and review the Activity timeline for the sequence email.
In the activity, it says they opened all and replied to some. I can tell you that not all were opened and none were replied to. I have also sent out 2 more test chains to see what happens. I am also wondering if I can send you photos privately as it takes me too much time to block out the private info.
Thank you for the additional info @VLopez94 and I’m sorry it took so long to block out the details.
I’m not sure I’m going to have a good answer for you as to why it is showing replied when they haven’t even opened, I can say I have not run into this in any account and I’ve worked in hundreds of them.
As an additional test, can you create a new unique sequence and add me as a contact that you enroll? jen @ worqflow . co
Please don’t add any other contacts to the same sequence, make sure you have the same number of steps, with an email like you did previously.
If you can use loom or vidyard to record the steps you take to create it and enroll the contact that would be really helpful (you can email that to me separately so you don’t have to share it here).
I won’t open the email, as soon as the sequence triggers the email, please check the contact record immediately to check for opens, as well as the sequence enrollment so you can grab screenshots of the immediate behavior changes.
Then we will wait to see if it does the same thing.
Hi Jen,
I have attached the video of me creating the sequence. I made a second
video enrolling you as a contact. However, it says ERROR. Maybe
your email was incorrect? You wrote this: jen @ worqflow . co
I added you as jen@worqflow.com.
Is this correct?

Hi Again!
I wanted to update you. Yesterday, I tested 2 different sequences to myself
again and to my husband. They both seem to be working! I have added you to
a test sequence made just for you. I think I might also enroll a couple
more test subjects to see if the sequences also work for them.
Now that it seems to be working a bit more, should we wait to speak
tomorrow when you can verify if you have received the second email in the
test sequence created for you?
Happy to do what you think is best!
Good Morning,
I wanted to inform you that the email sequences seem to be working now.
Yay! I wanted to check in with you and ask if you also received the second
email in my sequence. This way we can further confirm the sequences are
working.
Hi Jen,
I don’t know how it all started working but it is working now. Hooray!
Thanks for your outstanding attention. Even though we don’t know how the
problem was solved, I think we can say that this subject no longer needs
attention.
You’re welcome @VLopez94, sometimes things like this pop up and it’s good that we were able to get sequences working without showing incorrect statuses, however that happened, I’m so glad it’s working and you can focus on selling now!
