Changing lead owner

Hi all,

I’m working with a client that’s starting to use the HubSpot lead tool. One of the teams needs to have their leads unassgined to start with and they then work from a contact list and assign themselves the lead.

One of the team members is unable to change the lead owner - it comes up with an error message to say they do not have permission to change lead owner. However, I can’t see any settings on permissions that relate to leads. They have a sales pro seat. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Hi @KnowYourSuccess,

Do you have this setting enabled or not? Sync lead ownership and activities

With this setting enabled, the contact or company owner would have to be changed to reflect on the lead. In that case, the user would need edit access permissions for those contact / company records.

With this setting disabled, a user must be a super admin or have the permission ‘View prospecting as another user’, according to a HubSpot support rep I had a recent interaction with. I still find this a bit unintuitive – if you find anything different, let me know. But as it stands, that seems to be it.

Best regards!

Ahh ok, I don’t have the prospecting setting enabled and my client has multiple business units and “Contact owner” fields, so I don’t think the contact owner route is going to work.

Am I understanding correctly that they said that only super admins, and not sales users can change the lead owner? The point of using this for my client was to seamlessly have SDRs passing leads to sales reps.

Thanks for your response! I was having a hard time trying to find it anywhere.

@KnowYourSuccess with the sync setting enabled, super admins and users with the permission ‘View prospecting as another user’.

I have the same use case scenario, but the above solution no longer appears to work. Any more thoughts?

Hey @KnowYourSuccess

I can confirm you that only when the option Sync Contact owner with Lead owner if OFF

then you can change the Lead owner manually

but only Superadmins can change the owners.

BTW have in mind that Leads cannot be assign to Business units (thought the contact associated yes) so if you are creating Leads for different BU the only workaround for the moment is to identify the BU in the name.

Hope this helps

After doing some more research in the account, it’s not only super admins, it’s also anyone who has the setting “View Prospecting as another user”.

It also looks like any sales pro license can change the owner if it’s in their prospecting view, to someone else - but that they can’t change it on the contact object - I’d love confirmation on that though if anyone else has seen it.

Yes, this is correct

If the user is not SuperAdmin but has a paid seat/licence

the “View Prospecting as another user” is ON

and the Sync Contact owner with Lead owner if OFF

then this user can change the lead owner :+1:

Thanks for checking @KnowYourSuccess, updated my replies above to reflect this.
