Capturing if a logged SMS is an inbound or outbound text
When you log a phone call in the contacts activity record you have several options to choose from like the outcome and the direction of the call. When logging a text message these options are not available.

Add text log to the activity
Just as you can add a call log in the contacts activity you should be able to add a "text log" and "text outcome"
