Segmenting by country for language for email marketing

SOLVE

Hello! How is everyone managing this? We do email marketing in multiple languages and I have run into multiple examples of recipients in a Spanish speaking country for example that requested to actually receive the English version. Are you all using a tech on top of HubSpot to make this more seamless as segmentation can only go so far if we do not know what they speak. thanks!

Hi @lgaitan,

Typically, this is best solved with a hierarchy that you need to define, and then implement via a workflow, e.g.

  • If the expressed preference is known, use that as the value of the preferred language (e.g. preferred language field on a form)
  • If it isn't, check the country value
  • If that's unknown, check IP country
  • If that's unknown check email domain ending
  • If that's unknown, default to English

So typically, this involves one main field which is populated using a hierarchy of other fields. I have never used external tools on top of that.

Let me know if you have any follow-up questions!

Segmenting by country for language for email marketing

Thanks so much @karstenkoehler ! This is exactly what I was looking for in terms of better audience management. So you recommend adding preferred language on a form so they self select correct? The other items are to fill the field out if they did not self select correct? I think it makes total sense.

We are also looking into a web version in English for all other languages in case they want to view it in English.

Thanks for your help!

@lgaitan if you have a central page where people should be able to choose their newsletter language, that makes sense, yes. On country versions of pages, e.g. a German page, I would simply have the preferred language as hidden field.

Additionally, you could always create a landing page with a short form (email + preferred language) and link that from your newsletter; "Want to receive this in another language?"
