New validation rules for Phone numbers

SOLVE

Hi everyone!

I could use some help understanding the impact of enabling phone number validation in HubSpot. The message says:

"If you turn on phone number validation, the property value must match E.164 format."

Currently, our website collects phone numbers without any restrictions — users can even input letters in the field.

If I enable validation, will HubSpot reject those incorrectly formatted numbers entirely? Will they still appear in the CRM, or be hidden/removed somehow?

I just want to be sure how existing and future data will be affected before I make the change.

Thanks in advance!

Hi! Great question — here’s how it works:

If you enable phone number validation, HubSpot will require new or edited values to match the E.164 format (e.g. +18884827768). That means:

  • Only numbers (and an optional extension) are allowed

  • A valid country code is required (starting with +)

  • Letters or incomplete numbers will be rejected during manual entry or import

💡 Important:

  • Existing data won't be removed or hidden — it just won't be editable until it's corrected

  • New submissions (e.g. from forms or imports) will fail if they don’t meet the format

  • You can also set a default country code to help with entries missing it

So before turning validation on, you may want to clean up any invalid phone numbers to avoid issues later.

Hope this helps!
