Woocommerce Order Attributions via HubSpot

SOLVE

Hi all!

Please advise if this is the wrong forum.

We've got a Woocommerce install and having problems with Order Attribution - ie. where the customer arrived at the site from (Google, Organic, Instagram, other linked sites etc)

Lots of orders say "DIRECT" - which should be when a customer types our web address straight to the browser, but we are a tiny business and it just doesn't feel like more than half our customers would do this! Just a gut feeling at the moment.

So I'm wondering if there's an alternative possibility - We do social posts with HubSpot and link to our site on the posts. Is it possible the HubSpot shortlinks are triggering a "Direct" attribution on our Woocommerce?

I partly think this because some customers have said they linked to our website and ordered via social posts, but there are no attributions shown for these? Just lots of "Direct" and "Unknown" (See below)

(NOTE - We think some or all of the Unknown attributions are the result of a payment plugin problem which we are addressing separately)

Thanks in advance for any guidance..

Hi @ConorS,

The HubSpot short links in your social posts may be causing the "Direct" attribution in WooCommerce.

Here's why,

1. When users click on shortlinks from social posts, if the UTM parameters aren't properly set or recognized by WooCommerce, the source might not be tracked correctly, defaulting to "Direct."

Solution:

1. Ensure that your HubSpot shortlinks include proper UTM parameters to accurately track the source (e.g., utm_source=social, utm_medium=post).

2. Run a test by clicking a shortlink and checking the order attribution in WooCommerce to see if the source is tracked correctly.

3. Confirm that WooCommerce is set up to recognize and track UTM parameters properly.

As you mentioned, "Unknown" attributions could be due to the payment plugin issue, so addressing that separately is a good approach.

By ensuring your shortlinks are correctly configured with UTM parameters, you should see more accurate attributions in WooCommerce.

I hope it helps, let me know if you need to talk!
