Create and associate companies with contacts. Don't Create if I have already and associated company?

Hi everyone,

I have enabled the "Create and Associate Companies with Contacts" setting, which has been really helpful for managing associations.

However, I've noticed an issue: when I create a contact—for example, example@dom-ain.com—and associate it with a company named "Domain," HubSpot automatically creates another company called "dom-ain."

If the contact's email domain doesn't exactly match the company name (which happens in some businesses), HubSpot still creates a new company based on the email domain, even if the contact is already associated with a primary company.

How can I prevent this from happening? Currently, I have to keep merging the duplicate companies manually, but I shouldn't have to do this if the contact already has an associated company.

There's an option to stop the automation on the "Create" side and keep the Associations? Or there is a way to prevent company creation based on email domains if the contact is already associated with an existing company?

Thanks!

Hey @JSzlain, thank you for your reply.

A workflow can help manage company and contact associations, but it won’t override HubSpot’s default automation for company creation.

While there’s no direct ‘Don’t create company if…’ rule, you can build a workflow that checks for existing associations before creating new ones. For example, you could add a condition to only create a company if no existing company is already associated.

This way, you reduce duplicates while still leveraging useful automation.

Hey @JSzlain, Happy Tuesday!

HubSpot’s "Create and Associate Companies with Contacts" feature automatically creates companies based on email domains, even if a contact is already associated with a company.

To prevent this, you can disable the automation entirely or use workflows to ensure contact is checked for existing associations before creating or associating a new company.

I hope this information helps,

Pam

If I disable the automation entirely, I will lose associations and that is helpful.

A workflow will work? It will not work against Hubspot automation? There is no rule in workflow to "Dont create Company if"... what do you have in mind?
