BCC email - associate to company

I want to understand how the bcc email should be working.

I was told that when I bcc an email I am sending out to a contact it should automatically created the company on hubspot AND associate to the company (with the same domain name). And the email should populate in both contact and company.

Ive done a couple of tests.

1 - where the company and contact don't exist. When i test the bcc - the contact gets created but not the company. And no automatic association.

2- where the company exists but the contact doesnt. I test the bcc - the contact gets created. it has the same domain name as the company. But no association happens.

Only when I manually associate the company to the contact can i see the email show up.

The manual process would be too laborous when we have thousands of contacts our sales team is contacting.

Is there something wrong with my hubspot. Did i disable something. How can i get this bcc email to create and associate companies. Please let me know if there's a way to make this possible. Thank you!

Hi @jkim21,

Automatic company creation and association requires this setting to be enabled: https://knowledge.hubspot.com/object-settings/automatically-create-and-associate-companies-with-cont...

Can you confirm that's the case?

@jkim21 let's go through these one by one.

#1 This is due to another setting, not because of the association: https://knowledge.hubspot.com/object-settings/sync-ownership-between-contacts-and-companies

  • For a contact's primary company association, the Company owner property will update the Contact owner property.
  • The Contact owner property will not overwrite the associated primary company's Company owner property, unless the Company owner property is blank.
  • You can manually assign a new contact owner. In this case, the Contact owner property will not revert back to the value in the associated Company owner property.
  • The setting does not update the owner or records retroactively and it does not affect any custom HubSpot user field type properties.

#2 This is explained in the article I shared:

If a contact has an associated company that is different from their email address domain, the setting will not override the existing association. It will also not update or sync company property values to contact properties (i.e. Company Name).

I enabled this. And 2 things happened.

While I am happy company and contact associations have happened.

#1: I also became the Contact owner for 2 new contacts that happened to have been in the system from a while ago. I am assuming now that the company was created - through the domain name it associated those 2 extra contacts to me (since i became the company and contact owner).

A question came up. Does this OVERWRITE exisitng company/contact owners? We have many child and parent companies (not set up through company company associations).

#2: It also created companies from past bcc emails. (when it was off). Now that it was turned on i noticied it manually associated the contacts as well.

If a contact had a different domain name than it's originally manually created company. Does this created a duplicate?
