How does your small team manage their lifecycle stages and lead statuses? Tips or tricks?

We've read a lot about using these properties, but I'd love to hear some real world examples.
For instance - what's your process for sending leads to salespeople? How do salespeople qualify and unqualify leads (would you use SQL-Unqualified for the latter)? How did you customize your lead statuses?
