@asiaferguson in that case, you would set the report filters in my instructions to create date = all time, the chart type to line or area and select "Cumulative" under display options. This would tell you the current total and you could easily read the number from a year ago, too.

Yes, this is possible. When you create the report use Create Date - Monthly on the X-axis and Count of Contacts on the Y-axis. Apply a filter using Marketing Contact Status is any of Marketing Contact.
For the trailing 12 months KPI, you can use a basic number KPI and apply a filter for create date of less than 365 days ago while at the same time leaving the marketing contact status filter.

Sure, navigate to Menu > Reporting > Reports > My reports > Create report > Single object > Contacts.
Set the report up like shown below by first clicking Filters in the top left corner:
... then set up the Visualization tab as shown below.
If you want to show marketing contacts only, you would add an additional filter for marketing contact status under Filters. You would then see contacts with current marketing contact status by their create date.
