Is there a way to put a company in inactive status without deleting them?

We want to inactivate companies that don't fit our target but still want them in our data base so that we don't continue to contact them.  Some have suggested deleting but we don't want our sales teams cold calling on them if they don't see them listed in our customer database.  

Any suggestions is appreciated

I would probably recommend that you move the company lifecycle stage to other. Ideally, you would turn on the feature that maps lifecycle stage to the contacts, or use a workflow to do it, so that they could then been excluded/supressed from email marketing and nurturing workflows, and exlcuded from reps' views.

I'd recommend to add your upvote and specific use case on this similar idea: "Make it visually clear when a contact is inactive".

In the meantime, you might find the workaround shared in this thread by @Phil_Vallender helpful.

Alternatively, creating a custom property is another option, though I understand it may not be a perfect solution, but it could help bridge the gap for now.
