Is there a limit on number of contacts emailed in a workflow

If I add a large number of contacts into a Workflow, and it includes an external email being sent, is there a limit on the numbers of contacts that can be put into the workflow. I have experienced issues with sequences where you cannot put large numbers into a sequence and I do not want to start a Workflow that will not iperate properly because of any limits.
However, would it be a good move to batch send the emails, so that you can test and measure the sequences first - Also it means if you do have any issues, you're limiting the number of contacts that it affects.
