Complete (progressive) dropdown form from a CTA in Email

I have a request to create a welcome email series using the following flow to have contacts answer (conditional) properties IN the email.

1) Make a CTA for every response with a generated tag

2) Use the tag to have the contact enter a workflow that completes the property based on the tag

3) Design the email with smart rules, to only showing one question per email...if propety A is known, display property B, if B is known, display propety C etc.

Has anyone done something like this? Will it work? What problems/pitfalls should I anticipate? Any way to simplify the above flow?

Could you give an example instead of referring to features? What would this look like exactly, using examples, for a contact? What is a 'generated tag'?
