After creating a CTA and selecting the embed code, I paste this into the CMS on WordPress within the Text panel. When published the CTA is displayed but has two icons to the right of it that look to me like media play icons.
Can I just delete the code causing the play buttons?
It's weird that the embed code makes these 2 play buttons, never happened to me and it really shouldn't happen anyway. You should be able to just delete the code that makes them appear on screen but just to be sure, if you can give us the url where we can inspect what's going on we can give you a more precise answer ?

I'd paste the embed code into a code/HTML module if you have such in your WordPress Theme because a (Rich)Text Element/Module can cause some unwanted code generation like this one
Otherwise - like @LMeert said: It should be a problem to delete the "media codes"
