We sold software to real estate agents. Our best clients always always hired our product to help them automate their busy work. This means communication, paperwork, tasks etc... the worst clients were the ones that wanted to massively grow and didn't mind spending time and money to do so. The product just wasn't fit for them. It was fit for a solo business owner who wanted their weekends back.

I am in the software industry solving problems with people management.
Once, a customer came asking to solve project tracking. We could offer something but not as many things as required. As you mentioned, sometimes if a product is meant to solve problem "A", it doesn´t mean that can solve problem "B" with the same efficiency. Then, I was clear and advised them to find another solution. In the future, they can come back because I am trying to help, instead of making the sale and getting an unhappy customer in the next months.

I work in Fire Life Safety (Fire alarm company) and our services are required by law, for a great many building owner/operators. Interestingly: There are those in this industry that thinks that makes it "an easy sale", without realizing there is a good amount of competition.
For interests' sake, I made the following, as a result of this lesson, which helps me focus a little better on what a prospective customer is looking to solve {Keeping in mind, some people's "tertiary" will be another's "primary" and so on, but these are fairly common):
Fire Life Safety Inspection Drivers to buy:
Primary:
Required by law
Required by insurance
Desire to protect life
Desire to protect property
Secondary:
To save time (us doing inspection vs owner/staff)
To have more qualified people looking at Fire Life Safety equipment regularly
To save money over long term by performing regular maintenance
To ensure fire code compliance by (commercial) tenants
Tertiary:
Our prices are better than current provider
Our prices are more expensive than current provider, but service is better
Price may be higher or lower, but we offer more in depth service & maintenance

Absolutely, we've had some mind-boggling moments of innovation from our incredible customers that left us in awe! One standout story involves our product originally designed for sleek home organization. Lo and behold, a creative user ingeniously transformed it into an unconventional yet genius cat playground – complete with climbing spots and cozy nap nooks.
Initially caught off guard, we couldn't help but be charmed by the feline wonderland they crafted. After seeing the adorable photos shared by this customer, our team decided to embrace the unexpected and even created a special "Purrfect Play" edition inspired by their imaginative use.
Remember, innovation knows no bounds, and sometimes the most surprising detours lead to the most delightful destinations. Share your own tales of unexpected product adventures – we're all ears! 🐾🏠✨

My company produced and sells quicklime and cement ,
quicklime it is directly sell to the mining companies and these companies are buying our quicklime for reasons below:
the quality of our product which help them to controle the quantity needed during the matallurgical process and also save up some money and time . and the most important reason is the geographical location of our factory which is strategicaally located near most of for the mining companies in the region;
before we start producing in the region they could have waited for days to get the quicklime but with our factory they can get the product in 2h at least .
there was time, the mining companies were importing all of the quilcklime needed for their process from neighboring contries and they were facing a lot challengees from customs to the time of delivery .

Our customers are mainly Managing Directors, Commercial Directors or Marketing Directors of small to mid-market manufacturing or B2B technology companies that have realised that they do not have the in-house resources (time, experience, capacity) to improve their marketing enough to allow them to meet their business growth and profitability goals.
