I like to connect in the manner I feel the contact will be most receptive to. If they come in via email I respond with email and offer a phone call or chat avenue according to their preference

A great way to start is by sending emails. Emails campaigns can be customized to be personal and engaging, not only that but for me it appears much less of a scam compared to a DM.

I'm a big fan of texting with contacts, first, and then following up as appropriate via additional texts or phone call or email.  I also will use LinkedIn when I don't have mobile # or email, but generally try to transition the LinkedIn conversation to text, phone call, or email.
