hi there, I live in Austria, formal salutations - like in Germany - are a very integral part of business communication. If I write an email or a letter to a business partner, there are sometimes many fields involved. We say "Dear Mr. Mag. Bauer, MBA" = which consists of: Mr = Salutation Mag = german academic title, is addressed before the name Bauer = Last name MBA = academic title that is adressed after the name So if I want to cover this salutation, I need to choose a default value, if somebody does not have a value in the equivelant field. I need to enter a default value, which can only be a "space" if I dont want to show anything. So if somebody does not have a title before and after his name, the salutation looks like this: Dear Mr. Bauer, = with two spaces. This is a simple example. If the contact has an official office, there are additional salutation used: Dear. Dr. Mag. Mayor Bauer, MBA or Dear Dr. Mag. Hofrat Mayor Bauer, MBA (Hofrat being another earned title, not academic). In this example, there would multiple spaces, stretching the salutaiotn, if the person does not have any title (academic or given) or official position. The solution can be = the default value can be empty. Ths would not add any spacing, and solving this issue. This is very important in Austria and Germany. I am surprised this hasent come up yet.
