Hi hello Hubspot, I would like to code an email template from scratch so i have total control over my HTML head section and thereby use the "dnd_area" HubL Tags to enable the use the D&D functionality.
I’m Mícheál, the Associate Product Manager of the Marketing Email tool, and I'm happy to report that this Idea is now In Planning! Our team is actively researching and scoping out a solution for Drag and Drop areas in custom email templates.
The product development process is underway and we're hoping to deliver this feature as soon as possible. If you are interested in paricipating in the alpha/private beta period for this feature, please fill out this form or send me a message and we can set up some time to chat.
All updates will be relayed on this thread, so stay tuned!
When custom template is combined with the "dnd_area" HubL TagsI could write my own HTML code including the head section and be able to use my custom made modules. That would be a very strong solution for those who want full control over there source code.

We’re running into an image scaling issue when using these email DnD areas in the testing environment. Where can we ask a question about this or talk to someone?
In the HubSpot marketing email drag-and-drop editor, the only way to add text on top of an image is to make the image the “body pattern” of the component / layout. However, when this is done, there is an issue with the formatting of that issue on mobile. When you add an image as a “body pattern”, you have the option of having this image be “tile” or “stretch”. If tile is selected, then the image can appear multiple times. If stretch is selected, it looks like the image keeps its height but squishes the width of the image. See screenshots below (2) for reference.
This new feature has the capability of resolving so much frustration that we have had (design, flexiblity etc.). On https://app.hubspot.com/whats-new/1918859/all?productUpdateId=13888216, it says there is a private beta now, but I cannot apply anywhere. What would I have to do for us to take part?
We have a client for whom we desperately need that feature as they have an ecommerce connected to HubSpot and they want to use HubSpot to handle all of their email automation needs.
We developped custom modules to perform specific product recommendations but we are stuck with web safe fonts and the client won't want to use these emails as they don't respect their new branding guidelines. We know custom fonts are a bit risky given that they are not supported by all the clients, however there are workarounds but they all include adding some CSS into the <head> of the email. That feature would be a game changer, especially for people who invest money into their email marketing game, as it would let partners develop better modules with responsive features.
I requested the access on one of our HubSpot accounts a while back but still no news. Any idea of the ETA ?
For everyone looking to take part in the public beta, you can enroll your portal(s) through the Product Updates section by searching for "Dnd Areas."
The newest update allows the use of custom modules in the coded template as well. Which is very helpful to create more complete templates. Previously in the beta, you could only use default HubSpot modules. Which wasn't enough for our clients that have more complex email designs.
We have been using this beta for two of our clients since it first became available. So far this beta has worked very well for enabling complex designs that require hybrid coding and made it possible to support web fonts for those ESP clients that will show them.
@JTBuys THIS IS EVERYTHING!!!!! i spent the morning on a proof of concept template with static custom modules and a DND area that supports custom modules, and yeah it's pretty darn solid. thanks for the news!
@RKirkner, I found out how to make a generic link to it! You can view product updates in your portal here. Once, you click that, you'll be prompted to select a portal and redirect to the product updates section. Then you'll still need to search "dnd areas"; I couldn't inlcude the specific update id in the link.
I would also encourage anyone interested in this beta to also take a look at the "Mobile Optimised Email" private beta. I've started using that and it has reduced the amount of hybrid coding I need to support in my custom email modules.
Thanks @JTBuys. I learned that Product Updates is available to admin users only so it literally doesn't exist for me in Hubspot. I'm a developer with limited access to my client's portal so we had to contact the client's Hubspot admin and ask them to enroll us in the beta.
