Stop updating "close date" once the deal reaches "closed-won" stage.

I sell subscription based services, and to follow that, I have created the following deal stages in my (simplified) pipeline :

1. Opportunity (40%)

2. Started (closed-won)

3. Cancelled (closed-lost)

4. Lost (closed-lost)

The destinction between cancelled and lost is significant, because it allows me to know if a transaction was active for a period of time in the past, or if we never managed to sign it. When I move from started to cancelled, I record a "cancel date". The difference between "close date" and "cancel date" is when the contract was active.

However, in current functionality, as described in this article the close date continues to be updated AFTER the deal has been closed. So when a deal moves from "started" to "cancelled", the close date is erased.

Is there a legitimate use case for this? If not, would it be possible to update the "close date" only when the deal enters a "closed-won" stage, but not when it leaves it?
