Re: Google consent Mode v2 through Hubspot Cookie Banner?! (2024)

I've been on the hunt today to find an answer to this question. Based on how Google's Consent Mode works (specifically in Google Tag Manager), I don't think HubSpot's cookie banner solution currently works with it.

HubSpot isn't on Google's list of CCMPs with approved integrations, and I haven't been able to find any information about it from HubSpot's end. This is super concerning for companies that use HubSpot's CMS as well as their cookie banner tool.

It appears HubSpot would need to go through the steps to make their cookie management tools work with Consent Mode v2.

Frustrating. It basically renders HubSpot's cookie banner useless if you use anything Google-related at the moment. Hopefully HubSpot makes the necessary changes to work with Consent Mode v2 or someone has a solution that we're not aware of.

@AndrewBu if you'd like to continue using your manual implementation of Google Consent Mode, you'll need to update your code to support Consent Mode by following the steps in our dev docs here: https://developers.hubspot.com/docs/api/events/implement-google-consent-mode Otherwise, if you replace your script with HubSpot's native Tag Manager integration, basic Consent Mode v2 support will be applied directly.

@DAntonelli you're correct that our integration does not update any of the other default consent types. We do not have a timeframe planned to support storage types. If you wish to further customize which consent types are managed by the HubSpot cookie banner, this can be achieved by following the steps in our developer documentation to implement Google Consent Mode v2 manually and adding those storage types to the gtag functions.

@bjoernshw we do not have plans to support consent mode v2 on external websites through HubSpot directly. However, we will look to improve our documentation to make manual implementation easier.

@LottevanWijnen you're correct that visitors won't have the option to decline specific advertisers through the HubSpot cookie banner. However, you can display an opt-in policy that allows visitors to decline/accept cookies by category

Sharing a final update to announce that support for Google Consent Mode v2 is now live for all accounts! 🎉

If you are:

1. Using the HubSpot CMS

2. Integrated with Google Analytics 4 or Google Tag Manager via a Measurement ID or GTM ID

3. Not using a third-party cookie banner

Your website will support Consent Mode v2 for EEA/EU/UK visitors if you display a HubSpot cookie banner with an opt-in policy type to those visitors. We have removed the additional step that required you to previously enable a toggle to support Consent Mode v2 -- the Google Analytics 4 and Google Tag Manager integrations now support it directly.

Thanks for your questions!

@mnc_pic If a vistor is from the EU/EEA/UK regions, only consent collected under opt-in cookie banners will be passed to Google. Elsewhere, this restriction does not apply. You're correct, you can run different banners with different settings, as long as you have an opt-in banner targetted for EU/EEA/UK visitors.

@ANacho I agree with you, I can see how a integration template would simplify this work and save customers time. I'd encourage you to open a new Ideas Forum post about this so it can collect more feedback from the community and help us prioritize. As for now, I don't believe this work is on the roadmap

@PeterPu At the moment no, we don't have plans to create an integration for external sites, so the manual method is the way. Thanks for checking - I'd also encourage you to open a new post with this as feedback for other customers, so that our product team can take community responses and use cases into consideration.

I'll provide an update and this post will be marked as 'Delivered' when support for Google Consent Mode v2 is live for all.

I will update this thread again once this feature is live for all!

In Beta
February 15, 2024 02:59 PM

Hi everyone! We have opened a private beta for Consent Mode v2. If you'd like to take part, please request access through the 'Product Updates' section in your HubSpot account by following these steps. We will be limiting daily acceptance into the beta, so please expect a potential delay in approval.

I will update this thread when we move to public beta (March at the latest), at which point all accounts will be able to opt into the feature directly. Please note that during the beta, if you wish to apply Consent Mode v2 to HubSpot's Google integrations you will need to do so through your account settings (Settings > Website > Pages > Integrations):

Hi everyone, thanks for continuing to upvote and share your questions.

HubSpot will have a solution in place for Consent Mode V2 by March 2024. For customers who do not use HubSpot's cookie banner and instead use a third-party cookie banner, we recommend looking to your external provider for guidance on implementing Consent Mode V2.

If you'd like to be an early adopter of HubSpot's Consent Mode V2 solution, please fill out this form [edit: now closed] and I will reach out with next steps when possible. I will also update this thread when it becomes possible to opt into the beta directly

@Mattheus If companies don't adopt Consent Mode V2 and its requirements by the March 2024 deadline, they may experience measurement loss affecting initial campaign performance across Google's suite of tools. Specifically, this would mean:

  • Personalized data from EU/EEA/UK visitors won't be able to be used by Google
  • As you mentioned, remarketing audiences in Google Ads won't expand post-March, which will restrict the ability to serve personalized ads
  • A risk of non-compliance with Google’s EUUCP Policy, should companies fail to meet the requirements for obtaining explicit consent from EEA/EU/UK website visitors

Hello Rada, thanks for the update.
Would it be possible to have an estimate of when this update will be released? As the deadline from Google is the end of February, it would be good to have some dates from HubSpot.

@radapop Thanks for letting us know that you're actively working on this. Should we inform clients to temporarily move to a certified cookie banner?

And as a product manager, you're more informed on this topic. What's the concrete impact of not having the consent mode update?

From what I understand, the Google ads remarketing audience won't expand after march. But will we also miss other data or conversions in Google?

KTakki

Are we expecting consent mode v2 support in weeks, months, or years? We are currently in the process of ensuring that we are ready before March, and it would be nice to know if we can use Hubspot for this or not.

Google has just recently announced that you won't be able to measure any conversions from Google Ads if you are not using CM v2.

Thanks for sharing an update @radapop! Good to hear that we don't need to move multiple clients to another cookie banner.

The solution by March 2024 you mention, is that the early adopter version, beta or generall roll-out?

@radapop - This is great to see! Looking through the documentation, I'm a little confused on if the Consent Mode v2 values are passed for all users or just those in the EU, EEA, and UK.

For example, if we have one banner for US users who are not asked to opt-in, and the banner simply declares that cookies are used on the site, are the Consent Mode v2 statuses still passed to GTM? If yes, then we just use the consent states in GTM with the triggers for our tags, correct?

I want to confirm we can run different banners with different settings, but still pass the consent states to GTM for use.

ANacho

Even if this solution solves the immediate problem, it would be great to have an official HubSpot CMP integration template for GTM. This would simplify work for a lot of us, since natively HS does not provide a way to easily setup website events besides form submissions, nor does it integrate with other Ad platforms like Microsoft Ads, for example.

Hello @radapop , we are hosting our main website as an external website and I was wondering if you plan to implement the consent mode V2 as well for external sites down the line? So we could save on doing the manual integration. Thank you.

we are hosting our main website as an extrernal website. By when do you plan to have a solution for this? (I am not a developer)

The initial date is 6th March, at which point Google Ads may not be as effective (advertisers are required to have Consent Mode enabled to continue using Audiences in Google Ads (EU/EEA/UK)). Then there's a deadline in Q3/4 when your Google Ads might get suspended by Google if they are not user consent compliant.

Hello!

We are currently installing the cookiebanner.

As far as I can see, the visual layout of the banner isn't changing.

This means people who would like to specify their opt-in, are not able to decline specific advertising partners which is new in v2 (Cookiebot and other consent integrations do have this option). Is there a setting we may have missed to acomplish this?

It's great that Hubspot have upgraded to Consent Mode Verson 2.

Our website is hosted with Hubspot and we are using the Hubspot cookie banner, we are using the tag manger script in our header code so we don't have the Tag Manager ID in the integrations field in Hubspot. It's not clear if we need to enter the Tag Manager ID in the integrations now to enable consent mode v2 (basic mode)?

Or is consent mode v2 automatically enabled with the GTM header script?

Just trying to prevent double tracking.

Hello @radapop

By using Tag Manager "Tag Assistant", I have noticed that the Consent Mode V2 banner does not track the 3 “Storage Types”, as per Google’s documentation (here).

Is this a limitation of the product? Is HubSpot aware of this and if so, do we have a timeframe for when to expect this implementation?

Thanks
