As many may have noticed, big brands are starting to add in the option to view UI in Dark Mode. When we send out an email, our branding currently uses dark text - as most email clients (up until now) have had a light background. If we were to send out an email with our current logo and the user views it with their UI set to Dark Mode, it will appear like this:
We have reached out to find out whether HubSpot can send out the suitable logo version (either light text or dark text) depending on the user's interface preference, but there is currently no support for this.
Has anyone else experienced this same issue? We are not interested in changing our branding just to resolve this issue (some suggestions have been to add a stroke around the text or change the shade of the writing...)
Can HubSpot please consider support for this? We believe the inclusion of Dark Mode as a UI option will only increase going forward.
Hi again, everyone! I wanted to share a bit more context around this feature being marked as “Delivered” with the release of our preview feature for dark mode in marketing emails. We understand that sometimes something being marked as "Delivered" can be discouraging if the product release isn’t quite what customers had in mind, so I connected with a Product Manager for our Marketing Email tool to gather more context around the release of the preview feature specifically rather than an editor for dark mode.
Last year, they explored editing for dark mode as a possibility, but because most major email providers (such as Gmail) don't support these stylings, it wouldn't actually have the desired results on a lot of email clients. EmailonAcid has more specific details around challenges each email client faces with dark mode here. Most major providers other than Apple Mail don't support the media query (prefers-color-scheme), so any changes you would theoretically make in an editor for dark mode wouldn't affect the majority of recipients. Essentially, this would be adding a lot of complexity to the editor, and our customers would reap very little reward for all of the work editing it for dark mode, so an editor for dark mode was not prioritized.
With that said, there are some best practices we can recommend, nicely documented by EmailonAcid again, such as optimizing your logo, optimizing images, and ensuring accessibility in dark mode. Following best practices and testing your email before sending it will be the best way to ensure your email is optimized overall for dark or light mode, so you can find a version you like that renders well in both.
Our knowledge base article is still a great resource around using that feature, as it also outlines best practices, and provides steps on how to preview your email for dark mode. I hope this additional context is helpful, and if more resources around best practices for editing emails in dark mode are made available, I'll share them here!
Hi everyone! My name is Hallie and I am an Associate Program Manager on our Customer Experience Management Team. I’m excited to share that the ability to preview and optimize Marketing Emails for Dark/Night Mode is now available!
With this new feature, you'll have the ability to test your email for Dark Mode so that you can preview what your email would look like across different displays and devices, and design it for maximum impact across all types. There is more information about this feature in this Knowledge Base article.
As a note, some comments mentioned an ability to create a 'version' of an email for both Dark and Light modes, so if that is still something you'd like to see implemented, I would encourage you to post a new feature request for that specific ability. That way, we can share that feedback with our product teams and provide updates on that specific feature request.
Thank you all for your patience while the preview feature was implemented!
I'm a huge fan of this idea! I'm also a person who uses dark mode, so can really appreciate how important it would be to enable conditional email content based on dark mode. This also makes me wonder if this is part of / the true reason image-laden emails never have very good click throughs... Is everyone out there on dark mode and we just don't know it? (See other dev idea: Dark Mode Email Stats)
Here's an example for which I reckon a lot of people out there would really love conditional dark mode email editing. Our company logo in full colour is black and blue; we would need to use the full white version to be visible in a dark mode email. We can't use one or the other - the full colour wouldn't show up on dark mode and the full white wouldn't show up in light mode.
Here's an A/B test until this capability is available:
Variant A: full email on a typical field of white / other light colour
Variant B: full email on a "dark mode friendly" field of black (I guess the question here is, for those users who use light mode, would it look like we're in mourning or would it simply stand out in the crowd?)
Hubspot? Are you listening? We need this so badly! My emails look attrocious in dark mode across the board. I would hate to have to redesign all of my emails for dark mode. I can't figure out why all of my colors look like **bleep**. 😕
This is a pretty elementary concern but has gone unaddressed for years at this point...any idea on when HubSpot will accomodate such a massively popular user setting?
Just upvoting. Same problem here: We can't create logos and other graphics fitting for both modes, normal and dark. So we NEED a function to split either the complete mail or (prefered) the embedded pictures.
Considering how different emails look in dark mode, this is a critical tool we need. I also think anyone sending email out of hubspot no matter what account level should be able to preview their email in dark mode. I'm working out of a marketing starter account, and I don't know how to update the email so it looks good no matter who receives it. This is more than aggrevating and I don't have a way around it.
Bumping here as well! Would love to be able to segment out dark mode users and target them with different designs to be able to optimize our designs as a whole! Would love to be able to see the stats of how many people have it implemented on their phones.
Would be great if we can have more control over what to display when users are using dark mode vs non dark mode (e.g. when dark mode > display white font etc.)
Ok, 3 years later and still no solution. Being able to preview an email in darkmode is a start - but all that does is show us how bad it looks 🤣 Surely there must be a way to set button, row background and text colours to be either forced, or at least a secondary option for when it displays in dark mode by now?
The recent Outlook update on Mac for dark mode completely ruins the readability of our emails.
Come on dev team - you've had 3 years, can we get an update on this please?
