Export/Import of Leads (through the Prospecting feature)

JBroadley4

The introduction of Prospecting to manage leads is a welcome addition to HubSpot.  We have adopted it and over all it works really well.

However, some of the standard functionality in how you manage other record types (companies, deals and contacts) aren't available for Lead records.  This includes: exporting leads to a spreadhseet, and the ability to make wholesale changes to that export and re-import it back into HubSpot.  The ease of use of HubSpot doesn't seem to apply to Lead records which is frustracting and hard to understand.  Can this be fixed to make data management of lead data easier and encourage the adoption of the Lead feature in HubSpot?

Yes, this would be a great feature to have. Leads, in general, should receive all of the features that are available for all major record types. I suspect it will over time.

Totally agree.  I need migrate "leads" from another CRM for a client and this is currently not possible.   It sounds like there is no import wizard like there is for contacts / companies / deals.  But not sure if this is true for API as well.

A work around might be using a lifecycle stage to generate new leads through the interface, but that is only a partial solution and not ideal for a company migrating in to HubSpot with active Leads in flight.

The lifecycle stage to "pull leads in" is not a complete solution for companies that view a contact as being able to be a lead multiple times in their lifecycle with a company. (Cross-sell)

when we are importing contacts we need the ability to trigger some contacts of those as leads too and to be able to upload against the associated properties in the lead workspace.

I agree, it's really surprising to see that the lead object have less fonctionalities that other object in HubSpot, however a simple custom object have more fonctionnality and option than this one in my opinion... Can't wait to see the previous updates, cause I'm sure something is on the backlog on HubSpot side!

Please include"lead" properties as import options; many times these come in from an import sheet and need to be set as such quickly to save time and steps. Thank you!

For exporting Leads: for now you could build a custom report of the Lead properties you want to export, and export the unsummarised data from the report.

But no way to import changes etc.

I assume this feature is coming in the future. I'll be waiting 🙂

Shocked about all the steps I have to go thru to export a list of Leads!

I am shocked that I cannot do this...I'm planning to overhaul the way we've been tracking leads as we currently have >900 open leads that need to be cleaned out for the new process....and seemingly there is no easy way to do this in bulk. Frustrating!

Importing and Editing features on the Sales/Prospecting dashboard, please. Tried to figure out several workaround including workflows and Zapier automations, but it just got complicated, painful, and time-consuming. This is a super important feature indeed!

For collaboration with others exporting and importing leads is crucial. Without it data consistency is not ensured and efficiency is down massively, as manual process steps are needed.

Please push that feature to priority 1 on the roadmap.

Totally agree – it's honestly frustrating that basic functionality like exporting and updating Leads in bulk still isn't supported natively.

As a workaround, we built a simple solution using Google Sheets (though the same approach would also work with Excel) and the HubSpot Lead API:

  • Leads can be pulled into a spreadsheet with one click

  • Fields can be updated directly in the sheet

  • A second function pushes the changes back to HubSpot via API

It’s quick to set up and helps avoid messy workflows or contact syncs.

If this is something you're interested in, feel free to message me – happy to share the approach!

Totally agree with this - we are using leads extensively and really frustrated by the lack of functionlity to the point we are regretting the decision to use Leads.  Issues include:
- no option to update records using Import functionality

- no ability to build list views in the CRM index pages

- no ability to restrict access to properties (urgently needed)

Please, please can this be prioritised!

It’s frustrating that we can’t export leads from HubSpot. Exporting and re-importing for bulk edits or cleanups should be a basic feature. What’s even more confusing is that we can export property history (which includes the lead record ID), but then can’t use that ID to re-import or update anything. Not having this level of control is a major blocker for maintaining clean and accurate data.

We are in exactly the same position as you @CAdams21! Honestly we thought HubSpot would have developed the functionality during the beta phase so that the Leads object was on par with other objects in terms of functionality. We're regretting using Leads and are pretty much at the point of rebuilding using other objects - very disappointing.

Main issues:

- Import / Export capability

- Defaulted saved views (both columns and filters)

- Sales Manager access to all leads (we currently have to give Super Admin to way too many people)

- Associations with other objects - we use lots of custom objects, we need to be able to associate leads to those
