Hello, we created a custom object to track advocacy activities and would like to build a report that will list the number of activities and advocate has participated in.
Cross object reporting doesn't seem to be possible at this time. Would love a solve for this!

We are right there with you. We absolutely must have a cross-object report capability with custom objects so we can get the data from the parent table shown on reports of the child table. Think order master-order detail reporting; now apply that to the custom object work. Deals->MoreDealStuff.
And...it should allow for more than 2... Contacts->Deal->MoreDetailStuff --- just like an order would have on it...
Yes! It's highly needed. Unfortunately, that is a limitation of the custom objects but as it makes perfect sense that the reporting logic worked the same as deals, companies or tickets!
