Credit card payment fees

AHuntington

There needs to be an option for credit card payment fees to be passed onto the customer.  We would like to offer credit card payments as a option but want to be able to notify the customer that if they use a cc then there is a fee attached.  And the fee needs to be automated as part of the payment.

Hi everyone, thanks for your continued feedback and engagement on this idea. We’re excited to share an update today!

Checkout fees are now available across invoices, quotes, and subscriptions — in addition to payment links.

Now, you can automatically add fees based on the customer’s selected payment method (credit, debit or direct debit), giving you more control across every type of Commerce Hub tool.

If you haven’t tried it yet, you can start using checkout fees today by enabling them in Settings > Payments > Fees and policies.

We’d love to hear how it works for your business and what else you’d like to see next.

Thank you for helping us bring this to life and please continue sharing your ideas!

@Patrick216 I apologize for not responding sooner! Currently, our Checkout fees beta only supports payment links but we're actively working on support for quotes and invoices. We're aiming to have another update in September, so stay tuned!

In Beta

Hello all! I know it's been some time since my last update, but I'm excited to share that we've just taken our first step towards solving this ask. Starting today, you can automatically add fees to your Payment Links based on payment method — now available in public beta! This is just the first step. We're already working hard to bring this feature to quotes and invoices next. Stay tuned for another update in the next month or so.

To try this new capability, please join the beta in your account and then review our beta documentation to get started. And please continue to leave us your feedback, thank you!

Hi all - Joe here from the HubSpot product team again, it's been some time since I've shared an update here. I want to thank you all for continuing to share feedback and vote up this idea, as well as your patience. I'm happy to share that we have planned this capability as part of our 2025 roadmap. While I can't share explicit timing just yet, please know that we are aiming to build a flexible fee solution that should address the various needs that have been raised in this idea. Please continue to share your use cases and adding votes!

Hello all - Joe here from HubSpot product team. I wanted to provide an update and thank you for your continued feedback on this idea.

I want to be transparent that this capability has not been prioritized for the team this year. We're working hard to bring core billing capabilities to Commerce Hub such as the ability to store a payment method for future charges and automated sales tax. I will update this idea if we are able to prioritize this sooner, but until then please continue to upvote this idea so we can ensure this gets a slot on our future roadmap!

@TGordon05 I can definitely understand why you've suggested that workaround, that's creative! I'll pass this feedback along to our team that manges Products and Discount Codes; however, I can say that right now that isn't on the roadmap. I'm hopeful that we'll have more news to share on this front in the new year, so stay tuned.

Hi all - Joe here from the HubSpot product team. I wanted to share a quick update on this topic but first wanted to mention that I tried to find similar ideas and merged them into this Idea which had the most activity.

As of Q4 2023, we are actively reviewing this idea. Currently it is not on the roadmap with an explicit timline that I can share but I will return to this thread to post updates about progress. Please follow this thread and upvote if you're interested in this capability! Thanks.

@jperro - This is great!!! Quick question from our Accounting department: How will these fees be viewable in reports?

Woohoo!
Thanks a bunch @jperro

I was looking into alternative payment options, since the fees were putting a cap on transaction size I was okay with Hubspot processing.

Big difference maker.

*Much* bigger fish to fry and a separate topic, but would be incredible if Commerce Hub one day rolled out a POS option. Or even acquired a Point of Sale provider. Bi-directional integration doesn't seem to be a thing for any POS providers with Hubspot.

This is great new Everyone. Our Prayers have been answered.  Nice work @jperro and team!   Here's some more...

What is it?

Commerce Hub merchants using HubSpot payments and Stripe payment processing can now add fees to payment link checkouts when customers choose to pay by credit card. Set up fees for credit card transactions only, or apply fees automatically to all transactions.

Why does it matter?

You no longer need manual workarounds to add fees when customers pay by credit card. Your customers see fees clearly displayed at checkout before they pay, giving them transparency to choose the best payment method and encouraging them to select lower-cost options like ACH.

How does it work?

In beta, you can now create a Checkout fee for payment links (note: invoices and quotes coming soon). To create a new fee:

  • Go to Settings > Payments Settings
  • Under the Fees, Taxes, and Policies tab click Add Fee
  • Specify the fee name, percentage amount, and payment method then Save

The fee will now be default enabled for new payment links. To turn on the fee for existing payment links, edit the payment link and save it with the applicable fee enabled in the payment link settings. Note that at this time, you can create a card fee and a direct debit fee, or a fee that applies to all purchases.

At Checkout, the fee will be automatically added if the applicable payment method is selected by your buyer.

Who gets it?

Are we sure that this is working? I explicitly created a rule for credit cards and am not seeing the fee applied on payments for new invoices. I even did a full payment on a made-up invoice myself and am not seeing an added fee for this... I can confirm that I am enrolled in Beta for this.

Thank you.

This is so exciting. Can anyone confirm how this will impact subscription payments?

We are wanting to turn on the fees for future payments, but do NOT want to affect any existing subscriptions. Confirmation on the impact for subscriptions would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you 🙂

Also - can you confirm if we are working towards people being able to opt-in to cover processing fees? I work with a lot of non-profits that want to give people the OPTION to cover fees, but not make it mandatory.
