Business Units - Permissions & Roles

cullenwebster

Our team is needing a way to limit which units a particular user or team is assigned to. For example, if we have a team member who does support for one of our units and not another, I need to find a way to limit their access only to the unit they support.

Ideally, we'd be able to create roles for units and assign them to users based on which team they're a part of at our organization.

I'm not seeing any work-arounds for this, or any way to assign a user to a particular unit, which is somewhat disappointing and defeats the purpose of much of what we needed business units for.

Hi everyone! My name is Hallie, and I'm a Program Manager on the CXM Team. I connected with the product team on this request, and it is still on the roadmap, but I am marking it as 'Idea Submitted' for the time being because it's not quite in development yet. You are still welcome to book time with Jake to talk about this in more depth via the link in his comment here if interested. 🙂

Hello! My name is Hallie, and I'm an APM on our CXM team here at HubSpot. I'm happy to share that permissions specific to Business Units is a feature currently being reviewed by our product teams. 🙂

For more context, our product teams are investing permissions based on the Teams feature throughout HubSpot. Their recommendation is for customers that want to limit access per Business Unit create a Team per Business Unit and then use the existing permissions capabilities to control access. Permissions across HubSpot is a big area of investment that our teams are continuing to make improvements in in 2025 and beyond. Additionally, another roadmap item being considered is one that would more easily link the user experience of creating Teams based on your Business Unit.

As any further updates are released, I will be sure to share them here. Please continue leaving your feedback here in the meantime!

As a multi-brand group with multiple brands and teams all using the same account we absolutely need to be able to assign business unit access to specific users and teams.

Guys, it was advertised to us that purchasing the business units add-on would enable us to control read-write data priviledges per business unit. This thread implies that although there's a property at the Contact and Company objects for business unit classification, one cannot use this classification to control read-write priviledges accordingly.

Am I misunderstanding?

Yes please - would be very helpful in managing our business where we have different contracts with different teams working on them.

It would definitely help a lot. I've been getting this request from a lot of big clients.

Yes please this make a lot of sense.

Business Units is an expensive upcharge and was sold to us as a solution that would "keep everything COMPLETELY seperate". This is 1000% not true and the features to segment BUs are seriously lacking!

This is a functionality that is needed - otherwise, the value of Business Units is severely lacking and close to being irrelevant as it stands.

Many upvotes and still no update.

Any other workarounds other than "team" permission sets?

The work around of assigning Team Only does not work for all aspects of limiting the access to just a business unit.  I would like it so that when a person is assigned a business unit when they log into Hubspot it defaults to that business unit.  If it defaults to a different one then when you create a deal it defaults to the business unit of what you are signed into.  Very annoying.

We were also sold the idea that Business Units would also allow better access control / management from both a user and a customer perspective.

Radio silence from Hubspot on this topic.  Usually a representative chimes in to give us a solution or when the enhancement is on the roadmap plan.

I can't believe it is 2024 and this still isn't possible!

Adding to this, we have 2 separate business entities and users should only be able to access the contacts/companies assigned a certain business unit. Badly needed to stop cross-contamination

Badly needed, multiple brands under one account isn't working for us

We were also sold that business units would provide complete separation and that has not been the case. We have implemented various workarounds for email marketing, etc. but it should be so much simpler to use the features as advertised. It affects our use of Templates, Reporting, and more.

Urgently needed please!
