That's because in your case the thread and tracking was initiated from the CRM. If you start a thread directly in Gmail without the extension, you'll see that it won't be logged.

That does not yet mean that HubSpot automatically tracks anything you do in Gmail directly.
The Chrome sales extension then enables you to track and log all outgoing emails and replies to those emails. It automatically adds the BCC address that pushes your emails into the CRM.
Without the extension, your emails sent from Gmail would not be logged. You could send logged and tracked emails from inside the CRM but your Gmail / Chrome activity would be ignored.
Additionally, you get a sidebar with information about CRM records and HubSpot features like snippets and sequences.
Best regards!

Thank you for the reply. Interestingly enough, I only have my Gmail and HubSpot connected (no extnesion). I noticed however, when I replied to an email today in Gmail it appeared in Hubspot as well.
I.e when I send an email out in HubSpot, I see it in my Gmail as well. When the customer replies, I see it in HubSpot and Gmail. When I reply to the customer in Gmail. I also see it in HubSpot.
Curious to know what extra benefit the extension would add? Thanks!
